Tatts Ireland Postpones Derby, May Store Sales

Tattersalls Ireland has postponed its Derby and May Store Sales due to COVID-19 travel restrictions in Ireland. Originally set to take place from July 14 to 16, they will now be held-should government regulations permit-from Aug. 11 to 13.

Tattersalls Ireland Chief Executive Officer Matt Mitchell said, “Despite every effort being made to give all the normal participants an opportunity to attend the sales next week it became clear during the course of [Wednesday] that the current obstacles in our way are insurmountable. It was reconfirmed that all attendees; be they vendors, purchasers or employees who were due to arrive in Ireland from the UK are required to self-isolate for 14 days without exception and therefore their attendance at the sale would not be possible.

“The extremely difficult decision to postpone the Derby and May Sales has been made in the context of the unprecedented and unpredictable COVID-19 related circumstances and in the best interests of our vendors, purchasers and staff. We are very conscious of the impact that this decision will have on our valued clients, but we are also at all times mindful of our wider social responsibilities and the prevailing government guidelines.”

King George Purse Set At £400,000

The G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot on July 25 will be worth £400,000. Minimum prize money for a Group 1 in Britain post lockdown has been £250,000.

Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot, said, “With the deeply appreciated support of our Official Partner and race sponsor, QIPCO, we will be running this year’s King George at £400,000. In doing so, we are maintaining our policy of contributing significant executive contribution to our flagship races which began with £1.7-million being added across the Royal Ascot programme. We are paying executive contribution for all pattern and listed races, including approximately £250,000 for the King George after estimated owners’ stakes.

“We have maintained entry fees at 1.25% for the King George, rather than increasing to the new 2% limit for Group 1 races. This mirrors the policy for Royal Ascot where entry fees were maintained at the 2019 percentages at all race levels. We wish to make entering as appealing as possible for owners across the spectrum at a time where, unavoidably, prize money nationally is having to be reduced significantly without paying crowds. In our case, 70% of annual income comes from racegoers’ attendance and spend. All Ascot races will have previous standard entry fees in 2020.

Racing Welfare Halfway To Goal

Racing Welfare is halfway to its goal for its COVID-19 Emergency Appeal, with fundraising recently passing the £250,000 mark. The appeal, which has included the popular Furlong Factor singing competition and NightIn4Nightout campaign-which together raised £50,000-aims to raise £500,000 to make up for the charity’s spring and early summer fundraising events lost to COVID-19.

Since racing restarted, many of the sport’s businesses such as Betway, Racehorse Lotto and Hambleton Racing have created innovative ways of raising funds for the charity. Support from across the racing community has also come for events such as the Royal Ascot Virtual Preview Evening, supported by Sporting Life, and Racing Welfare’s Best Turned Out series, which was backed by Betfair.

Racing Welfare is asking racing fans that would normally attend a fixture this summer to donate the price of their ticket to its appeal. The addition of Gift Aid means that for every £20 donated towards its Emergency Appeal, Racing Welfare will receive an extra £5. The charity will be on the look out for people showing their support for the campaign on social media, sharing and retweeting images of racing fans enjoying the sport from home whilst supporting Racing Welfare.

Racing Welfare Chief Executive Dawn Goodfellow said, “The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been felt throughout the racing industry. For Racing Welfare the cancellation of many of our usual fundraising events has seen us face a huge income deficit at a time when our services have never been needed more. The generosity of the racing community in response to our COVID-19 Emergency Appeal has been truly inspiring and to be able to announce that we have passed the halfway mark of £250,000 is a huge boost.

“It has been great to have racing back underway and on our screens and I am certainly looking forward to watching all the major summer festivals from home. Your donations really do count and reaching our £500k target will enable us to continue supporting the workforce that make racing the wonderful sport that it is.”
