Acknowledging ‘Inconsistencies’ in New Timing System, Equibase Says Del Mar Turf Races Will Be Hand Timed for Rest of Meet

In response to reports of inaccurate times being produced for Del Mar turf races by its new Gmax GPS timing system, Equibase said in a statement Thursday that Del Mar will hand time its turf races for the rest of the meet. The statement also admitted the company found “inconsistencies” in the Gmax timing of Del Mar turf races that it will work to fix before the fall meet at the seaside oval.

“Del Mar racetrack will be utilizing hand timing for turf races for the remainder of the summer meet,” the statement read. “The times produced by the Equibase GPS System for dirt races have proven to be highly accurate and will continue to be provided. Last week, we discovered some inconsistencies with respect to the GPS survey and our historical survey relating to the turf course that we will work to rectify before Del Mar’s November meet. The GPS system will continue to provide the full running order for all types of races.”

2020 AAEP Convention And Trade Show Goes Virtual

The American Association of Equine Practitioners announced today that the 2020 AAEP Annual Convention & Trade Show, originally scheduled for Dec. 5 through 9 in Las Vegas, NV, will take place instead as a virtual event. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the potential safety risks to AAEP members, staff, exhibitors and others attending necessitated the move.

The newly envisioned AAEP Virtual Annual Convention & Trade Show will include many of the popular elements which have brought equine veterinarians together annually for nearly seven decades: peer-reviewed education; camaraderie with colleagues; and connection to Trade Show exhibitors from all sectors of the veterinary market.

The exact dates for December's Virtual Convention & Trade Show and the schedule of sessions and events will be announced in September. The educational program will offer a blend of live and on-demand sessions, ensuring practitioners can conveniently earn CE hours based on their personal schedules.

“The AAEP Convention is not only an educational experience but an important gathering for our close-knit community of Horse Doctors,” said AAEP President Dr. David Frisbie. “While we may not be together in the same city this year, the Virtual Convention promises to offer the connection that so many of us are seeking after the disruption of 2020.”

Registration for the Virtual Annual Convention & Trade Show will open in September and offer a different pricing structure than the in-person event. Those who have already registered for Las Vegas will be contacted by AAEP staff.

Ocean Star Added To Tattersalls August Sale

Winning 2-year-old filly Ocean Star (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) has been added to the Tattersalls August Sale as a wildcard as lot 199A. A £9,000 Tattersalls Ascot yearling purchase last year, Ocean Star was runner-up twice for trainer Archie Watson before breaking her maiden by 11 lengths at Chepstow six days ago. Ocean Star is out of the unraced New Approach (Ire) mare Miss Wicklow (Ire), and Forte Dei Marmi (GB), a Grade I winner in Canada, appears under the third dam.

Dandalla To Swerve Morny

Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), the six-length winner of the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot who followed up in the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. on July 10, will miss this weekend’s G1 Prix Morny and wait for the G1 Cheveley Park S. on Sept. 26.

“It’s a combination of reasons,” said co-owner Nick Bradley. “The ground isn’t ideal, obviously, and she is actually lighter than she was at Ascot. I think she’s just going through a growing phase. Her work has been very good. It was eye-popping in March/April time. We’re going to be a little bit patient and treat her like a good horse. She’ll come back for the Cheveley Park. That is still the plan.

“We’re treating her with caution. She’s definitely getting there. If we had another week maybe we would have gone.”
