Jason Hall, an Idaho-based owner and bloodstock agent, was handed a $10,000 fine and 30 day suspension by Southern California's stewards for falsifying foaling location records submitted to The Jockey Club.
BloodHorse reports that Hall was sanctioned by the stewards on July 9 for submitting foaling information on a trio of horses he co-bred – Really Big News, Winning Big, and Kal Barg – that led to Really Big News and Winning Big to be registered as California-breds. All three horses are currently listed as Kentucky-breds on Equibase.
Really Big News, a son of Mr. Big born in 2018, is the only horse in that group to race, winning one of 14 starts and earning $109,640 for owner Sausalito Partners and trainer George Papaprodromou. The horse was purchased for $45,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita Fall Yearling Sale.
Winning Big, a 2-year-old colt by Mr. Big, and Kal Barg, a 3-year-old colt by Mark Valeski, are unraced. Winning Big brought $5,000 at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearlings and Horses of All Ages Sale, while Kal Barg sold for $70,000 at last year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. June 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale.
“Mr. Hall was very forthcoming with his account of what happened approximately five years ago, and he answered all the follow-up questions that the stewards had for him,” read a report from the stewards' minutes on the California Horse Racing Board website. “After all the evidence was presented and discussed, the hearing was brought to a close.”
The ruling also called for Hall to pay $5,778.76 in restitutions to the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association for breeders awards that were paid out on Winning Big. His suspension will be served from July 15 to Aug. 13.
