First Mission, the 5-2 second choice on the morning line for Saturday's Preakness Stakes, will be scratched from the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, owner/breeder Godolphin confirmed via press release on Friday morning.
“Godolphin will scratch First Mission from this year's Preakness Stakes after consulting with the 1/ST veterinary team,” the statement reads. “He will receive further evaluation in Kentucky at Rood and Riddle hospital with Dr. Larry Bramlage.
“Brad Cox worked with the 1/ST veterinary team the last couple of days to try and fully identify a left hind issue but were unable to do so on the grounds at Pimlico.
“Godolphin's Director of Bloodstock, Michael Banahan, said: “We are obviously very disappointed, but the welfare of the horse is our utmost concern, and we are going to take the necessary steps to determine the best course of action to get him back on the track.””
The 3-year-old son of Street Sense last won the G3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland, when making just his third career start.
Seven horses now remain in the entry box for the 2023 Preakness, including Kentucky Derby winner Mage.
