Mage Leads Nominations To Pennsylvania Derby; Pretty Mischievous, Randomized Lead Cotillion Noms

The $1 million, Grade 1 betPARX Pennsylvania Derby and $1 million, Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes, headlining events on a star-studded program set for Saturday, September 23 at Parx Racing, lured a strong group of early nominations led by Kentucky Derby winner Mage, Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous and Alabama Stakes winner Randomized.

The 1 1/8-mile Pennsylvania Derby attracted 25 early nominations led by Mage, most recently seventh in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes Aug. 26 at Saratoga Race Course. The nominations also include the top three finishers from the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Aug. 22 at Parx – Il Miracolo, Cagliostro and Daydreaming Boy – along with Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby winner Practical Move and Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens winner One in Vermillion.

Graded stakes winners Hit Show, Raise Cain and Foggy Night. Saudi Crown, runner-up in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy; West Coast Cowboy, runner-up in the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby; and recent stakes winners Big Data and Drake's Passage are among the other Pennsylvania Derby nominees.

Godolphin's Pretty Mischievous, the winner of three straight Grade 1s for trainer Brendan Walsh, tops the group of 17 early nominations for the 1 1/16-mile Cotillion. She's joined by Randomized, the winner of three of four for trainer Chad Brown including back-to-back victories in the Wilton Stakes and Alabama at Saratoga.

The Cotillion also attracted the first three finishers from the Cathryn Sophia Stakes, run Aug. 22 at Parx, in Foggy Night, Yesternight and Majestic Creed. Grade 3 Indiana Oaks winner Defining Purpose, third in the Alabama and seventh in the Kentucky Oaks; Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks winner Occult, Fleet Indian Stakes winner Ichiban and Grade 2 winner Hoosier Philly are among the others nominated to the Cotillion.

The Pennsylvania Derby and Cotillion headline the Sept. 23 card that also includes the $400,000, Grade 2 Gallant Bob Stakes for 3-year-olds at 6 furlongs; the $300,000 Parx Dirt Mile Stakes for 3-year-olds and up; the $250,000 Grade 3 Turf Monster Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 5 furlongs on the turf; and the Grade 3, $200,000 Greenwood Cup for 3-year-olds and up 1 1/2 miles.

The card also features a pair of $150,000 events for Pennsylvania-bred and sired 2-year-olds in the Imply Stakes and Prince Lucky Stakes; and the $100,000 Plum Pretty Stakes for Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up and $100,000 Alphabet Soup Stakes for Pennsylvania-bred 3-year-olds and up.
