Four of the six horses entered in Belmont Park's third race on May 19 had to be scratched after they did not receive furosemide in the required pre-race timeframe. According to a tweet from Patrick McKenna, vice president of communications for the New York Racing Association, Impazible Donna, Dancing Sophia, Ok Honey, and Movie Moxie were all scratched, leaving a two-horse contest between Pharoah's Heart and Honey Money.
Pharoah's Heart won as the 1-2 favorite.
The New York State Gaming Commission's Rule 4043.2-7 states that “Any horse that is eligible for the administration of furosemide must be present on the grounds of the racing association or corporation no less than four hours prior to scheduled post time of the race in which the horse is scheduled to compete. A horse that is not present at least four hours prior to post time or that has not received the administration of furosemide pursuant to this subdivision shall be ineligible to start.”
McKenna told the Thoroughbred Daily News that in this case, it was not possible to run the race for purse money only, because the responsibility to insure furosemide administration falls to NYRA and not to the state racing commission.
Trainer Linda Rice told the Daily Racing Form that her trainee in the third race, Movie Moxy, was on site at Belmont but no one showed up to give the horse furosemide this morning. Another horse in her barn who was entered in another race did receive treatment on time.
