Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Two Phil's will bypass the Belmont Stakes (G1) June 10 and instead point to the $500,000 Ohio Derby (G3) going 1 1/8 miles June 24 at Thistledown, trainer Larry Rivelli told BloodHorse.
The Hard Spun colt breezed five furlongs Sunday at Rivelli's base at Hawthorne Race Course, clocking :59.80, the fastest of 15 timed moves at the distance. The drill marked his second breeze since finishing second to Mage in first jewel of the Triple Crown May 6.
Rivelli decided to pass on the middle jewel, the Preakness (G1) May 20 at Pimlico, because of the short turnaround time.
Two Phil's, owned by breeder Phil Sagan, Patricia's Hope, and Madaket Stables, won the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) March 25 at Turfway Park on the road to the Kentucky Derby and was second in the Lecomte (G3) Jan. 21 and a third in the Risen Star (G2) Feb.18, both at Fair Grounds in his first two outings this year.
