Sea Glass Stables' Jumpin Junie shed her maiden status in fine style Sunday at Woodbine when she rolled to a convincing victory in the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes for 2-year-old Canadian-bred fillies.
A daughter of Midnight Lute, ridden by Kazushi Kimura, Jumpin Junie tallied by 1 1/4 lengths in the 1 1/16-mile test on the all-weather main track while making her third career start. Sent off at 13-1 odds, she completed the distance in 1:43.61 and returned $29.70.
Friends for Life set the early pace, clocking fractions of :24.27 and :48.59 through a half mile as Jumpin Junie chasing second, about two lengths back, in the 10-horse field.
Friends for Life was steadily getting out through the backstretch and on the far turn and began dropping back while Jumpin Junie was handy to take charge outside the seven-sixteenths mark and led by a head as six furlongs went in 1:12.66. She had a half-length advantage over Souper Sinclair in early stretch, but that rival was in tight quarters and bumped with rivals losing her momentum and weakening to finish eighth.
Favorite Me and My Shadow, stalking from fifth, then fourth, was forced out in early stretch and bumped, and while she could not catch the winner, won the battle for second with a determined rally, finishing a nose to the good of third-place finisher Fortyfiveseventy.
Jumpin Junie was fifth in her career debut Aug. 13 at Woodbine after a stalking trip. She returned Sept. 17 with a change in running style to finish second in a maiden special weight race after setting the pace and losing a head bob. She broke through for victory with a top effort Sunday for trainer Danny Vella.
Bred in Ontario by Karen E. Carroll, Jumpin June is out of the Curlin mare Another Flashback. She was a $30,000 purchase from Taylor Made Sales Agency at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
