Jockey Nik Juarez was taken into police custody in Oceanport, N.J., on Sept. 30, according to records with the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office.
Juarez, 30, is being held on charges of simple assault: purposely/knowingly causing bodily injury. Juarez was previously arrested for simple assault by Oceanport police on Aug. 16, 2022. Charges in that case apparently were dismissed.
It is not known who the alleged victim is.
His agent, Jimmy Riccio, said Juarez and his wife, Melissa, had returned to the United States from her native Sweden shortly before the jockey was taken into custody Sept. 30. The couple has two children.
Riccio said he has not heard from Juarez since the arrest. He said he does not have any details on why Juarez is being held.
A winner of 978 races from 6,637 mounts, Juarez last rode at the Monmouth-at-Meadowlands all-turf meet Sept. 16 when he won with two of his four mounts. He was scheduled to ride in Monday's 10th race at Parx Racing aboard Gabagool, but the horse was scratched. Juarez is named on three mounts Wednesday at Delaware Park.
