Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance To Host Breeding Seminar On Aug. 19

With the increasing emphasis on mare power when it comes to breeding matchups, Thoroughbred breeders today need to understand the importance of what their mare can bring to the table just as much, if not more, than the stallion they choose. It can be a mind-boggling mission, but one that should be taken seriously.

The Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance is proud to present an in-person seminar with hopes to help breeders “Harness the Mare Power in Breeding” on Aug. 19. The seminar will take place at Pudder's in Shelbyville, Ind., starting with a lunch buffet and networking, followed by an insightful seminar and more networking for Indiana Thoroughbred breeding farms and owners.

With a commitment to the betterment of equine breeding practices, this seminar will bring together two experts from notable Spendthrift Farm, as well as local professionals, to share their insights and tips for selecting the ideal stallion for your mare. The event will encompass a wide range of topics, including genetic considerations, performance analysis and potential for sales.

Indiana stallion and farm owners are invited to attend the seminar and use this as a way to reach out to mare owners and potential breeders.

Registration for the seminar and lunch is free to all ITA members. If you are not a member, but would like to attend, a membership can be purchased on-site for a discounted price of $20, paid at the door. Door prizes will be given, thanks to sponsors of the ITA including Finish Line Horse Products, the ITA and more.

Mark Toothaker is the Stallion Sales Manager at Spendthrift Farm. He is a native of Van Buren, Ark., and attended Louisiana Tech for their equine program. He began his career working on the racetrack for trainers including D. Wayne Lukas, Joe Cantey and Gerald Romero, as well as training horses on his own. After a stint in the Army, he moved to Kentucky to run Liberty Farm in Midway for longtime breeder Allen Poindexter. Over the next few years, Mark worked as a consignor and sold a few Breeders' Cup winners, including Mile champion Kip Deville and Juvenile Fillies winner Stardom Bound, before joining Spendthrift in 2012.

Upon graduation from high school, Toffey jumped straight into the horse industry, working with the broodmare and yearling divisions at Spendthrift Farm. He spent time on the track with Al Stall, where he fell in love with the competitive nature of the horse industry. He then went to Woodford Thoroughbreds where he started breaking and training horses and quickly climbed his way to assistant trainer. Toffey spends his free time coaching youth basketball and is always surrounded by friends and family.
