‘I Don’t Know What Happened There!’: From First To Last And Back Again, Golden Gate Racemare Defies All Odds

Morning Addiction's win in a waiver claiming event at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday was accomplished in neither frontrunning nor come-from-behind style; instead, the 6-year-old spayed mare managed to utilize both styles in her $5.20 victory.

Ridden by Assael Espinoza in the 5 1/2 furlong contest, Morning Addiction started with an easy lead down the backstretch. Around the far turn, however, Morning Addiction suddenly dropped back to the rear of the field.

“I don't know what happened there,” said track announcer Matt Dinerman.

Passed by her rivals, Morning Addiction dug back in gamely for the stretch run. Espinoza guided the mare to split rivals in the final sixteenth of a mile, just getting up to win a photo finish by a head.

Said Dinerman: “How much the best was she?”

It was the seventh lifetime win from 19 starts for Morning Addiction, who is trained and co-owned by Bill McLean.
