There's A Chance Stable, Medallion Racing, Abbondanza Racing, LLC, Parkland Thoroughbreds, Paradise Farms Corp, and David Staudacher's Horologist has been named 2021 New Jersey-bred Horse of the Year and champion older female by the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association of New Jersey for the second consecutive year.
Horologist started her championship campaign with a one-length win in the $100,000 Top Flight Invitational Stakes at Aqueduct. Following two off-the-board finishes, Horologist was a game second the Royal Flag in the Grade 3 Shuvee before a dominating 8 ½ length win in the Summer Colony Stakes at Saratoga. Horologist finished second in the G2 Beldame Stakes before ending her racing career in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Horologist was sold at the 2021 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for $800,000 to Katsumi Yoshida.
The daughter of Gemologist out of Cinderella Time, by Stephen Got Even finished 2021 with $247,500 in earnings. She won nine of 27 career starts with earnings of $962,939. Horologist was bred in New Jersey by Holly Crest Farm.
John Bowers, Jr.'s homebred Pickin' Time was named champion 3-year-old and champion sprinter after his successful campaign that finished with two stake wins.
The son of Stay Thirsty out of the King of Kings (Ire) mare, Born to Royalty won the $100,000 New Jersey Breeders Handicap at six furlongs on Aug. 29 at Monmouth Park. Pickin' Time ran second to Jackie's Warrior in the $300,000 G2 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx before a fifth-place finish in the Perryville Stakes at Keeneland. Pickin' Time ended his championship campaign with a 1 1/4 length win in the $100,000 City of Laurel Stakes at Laurel Park. He finished his 3-year-old season with $241,300 in earnings under the care of trainer Kelly J. Breen.
He'spuregold gave breeder/owner John Bowers, Jr. and trainer Kelly J. Breen their second champion as he took home the honor of champion turf runner.
The 3-year-old son of Vancouver out of the Smart Strike mare, Smart N Classy, won the Irish War Cry Handicap at one mile on the turf in the race after he broke his maiden. He'spuregold finished a close-up fourth in the G3 Saranac at Saratoga before an off-the-board finish in the Hill Prince Stakes. His dam, Smart N Classy, was a graded stakes-winning New Jersey-bred for John Bowers, Jr. who earned $466,209. As a broodmare, Smart N Classy produced the multiple stakes winner Valedictorian ($761,115) and stakes winner Stay Smart ($266.080).
ABL Stables, Dominic Bossone, Peter Donnelly, and Nadine Schnoor's Golden Brown was named champion older male after his stakes-winning campaign in which he won three stakes races and earned $204,950.
Golden Brown finished second in the Mr. Prospector Handicap on May 29 in his first start of the year but was moved up to first following a medication violation of the winner. Golden Brown won the $75,000 John J. Reilly Handicap by 2 3/4 lengths and finished second to champion 3-year-old and champion sprinter Pickin' Time in the $100,000 New Jersey Breeders' Handicap. The son of Offlee Wild out of the Chester House mare Suzee Sunrise, finished 2021 with a 1 length win in the Joey P. Handicap at five furlongs over the Monmouth Park turf in 56:2. Bred in New Jersey by Esther de Jong, Golden Brown has reached the winner's circle in 10 of 31 starts with earnings of $800,620.
Holly Crest Farm homebred Speaking is the New Jersey-bred champion 2-year-old after winning two of his four starts.
The son of Mr. Speaker out of the Silver Deputy mare, High Noon Nellie, won his first start on August 29 by 6 1/4 lengths against New Jersey-bred maiden special weight company. He followed up his successful first race with a convincing score in the $100,000 Smoke Glacken Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths. Mr. Speaker finished his 2-year-old campaign with a second-place finish in the $100,000 Park Juvenile Stakes on Dec. 29. The 2-year-old champion, trained by Eddie Owens, Jr., has earnings of $141,425.
Cinderella Time was honored as Broodmare of the Year in 2021.
Holly Crest Farm bred the 11- year-old mare by Stephen Got Even out of the Defrere mare, Dethroned. Cinderella Time's first foal is the two-time New Jersey-bred Horse of the Year, Horologist. Cinderella Time produced an unraced filly by Peace and Justice and a 3-year-old colt by Peace and Justice. She was sold in foal to Twirling Candy at the 2019 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale to Michael Lischin and Bob Petersen's Stables for $245,000 and has since produced a yearling filly by More Than Ready and is foal to Speightstown.
Hey Chub is the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association of New Jersey's Stallion of the Year for the sixth time in his career. The 22-year-old son of Carson City out of Donna Doo by Spend A Buck was a multiple stakes-winning New Jersey-bred who hit the board in 30 of his 36 starts and earned $441,755.
Hey Chub has sired stakes winners Chublicious ($653,393), winner of the 2017 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes, 2018 New Jersey-bred champion sprinter Brother Chub ($542,336), Chub Wagon ($533,600), and stakes-placed Chubbiana ($119,872).
