The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association revealed its divisional champions for the 2021 racing season, which encompassed on-track achievements and leaders in the breeding realm.
Award presentations will be made at the organization's annual awards banquet, which is scheduled for June 11 at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La. The state's 2021 Horse of the Year will also be announced at that event.
Half Ours was named the state's stallion of the year. The late son of Unbridled's Song stood at Clear Creek Stud in Folsom, La., prior to his death in a paddock accident in July.
He saw 57 winners from 96 starters in 2021, for earnings in excess of $2.1 million. His runners were led by Standing Perfect, who notched victories in the LA Bred Premier Prince Stakes and Louisiana Legacy Stakes, both at Delta Downs. He also sired stakes-placed runners Our Lost Love, Aw Shucks, and Jimmy Two Times.
Buttercup's Song was voted Louisiana's Broodmare of the Year. The Unbridled's Song mare is the dam of 10 winners from as many starters, highlighted in 2021 by Pound for Pound, by Redding Colliery, who won the Star Guitar Stakes at Fair Grounds and finished second in a pair of additional stakes races.
Other runners of note out of Buttercup's Song include Grade 2 winner Flatlined (by Flatter), stakes winner Regroup (by Honour and Glory), and stakes-placed Volare Cantare (by Roman Ruler).
