Girolamo, a Grade 1 winner and veteran sire, died on Oct. 8, according to Korea Racing Authority records.
The 16-year-old son of A.P. Indy had resided in Korea since 2018. He currently ranks 26th on Korea's general sire list, and he was the country's leading first-year sire of 2021 – a category that includes veteran sires standing in Korea for the first time, as well as true freshman sires.
Bred in Kentucky by B.P. Walden, P. Steinberg, and WinStar Farm, out of the Grade 3 winning Mr. Prospector mare Get Lucky, Girolamo was a private purchase by Godolphin prior to his racing career. He won on debut in Saratoga as a juvenile for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, then he was moved to trainer Saeed bin Suroor for his 3-year-old campaign and beyond.
At three, Girolamo rolled off a three-race winning streak that culminated with a victory in the Grade 2 Jerome Handicap at Belmont Park. He finished the year with a start in the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park, where he finished 12th. His 4-year-old season was highlighted by a win in the G1 Vosburgh Stakes.
Girolamo retired with five wins in 11 starts for earnings of $443,800.
He entered stud at Sequel New York for the 2012 breeding season, then he moved to Darley's Kentucky base for 2014, where he resided until being sold to stand in Korea in 2018.
From eight crops of racing age, Girolamo has sired 177 winners with combined progeny earnings of $17,741,072.
Leading the way among his U.S.-sired progeny was Grade 2 winner Highway Star and Grade 1-placed She's All Ready. His first crop of Korean-sired runners featured Complete Value, who was named the country's champion 2-year-old colt of 2021.
