With no winning tickets in the Early Pick 5 on Friday afternoon at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif., the Saturday program features an Early Pick 5 carryover of $44,023. Track officials project at least a quarter million dollar new-money bet into the Saturday carryover.
The 50-cent minimum Early Pick 5 consists of the first five races and is a popular, low 14% takeout bet. Race 1, the first leg of the Early Pick 5, has a scheduled post time of 11:45 a.m. PT/2:45 p.m. ET. The last leg is Race 5, with an approximate post of 1:45 p.m. PT.
Race 1 is a maiden claiming sprint with eight set to compete. The morning line favorite, Mr Botanicals, is likely to go off as a heavy favorite. Race 2 is a contentious heat for hard-knocking claiming sprinters, and the third race is a similarly competitive group of routers. Among the main contenders in Race 3 are Good Bye Putin and Rocks and Salt, both shipped north by trainer Carla Gaines in search of easier company.
Race 4 is the only turf race in the sequence – a maiden special weight route for fillies and mares. Local contender Assignation comes off a runner up finish at the level and is the 9-5 morning line favorite while Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale sends Bellize back to the Bay Area after a second-place finish at Golden Gate in October. Race 5, another sprint race, attracts synthetic specialist Bear Chum, an ultra-impressive 8 for 10 on the Golden Gate Tapeta. He is the 5-2 morning line favorite in a field of 8.
Eleven races are on the docket for Saturday's card. The signature event is Race 9, the Bear Fan Stakes for California-bred filly and mare sprinters. A large field of 13 is entered to run.
Horseplayers should also note that Sunday afternoon is Closing Day of the fall meet, with mandatory payouts in the Golden Pick 6, Rolling High 5, and both Pick 5 wagers. Like Saturday, Sunday has 11 races and an 11:45 a.m. PT early first post.
