Gemologist, Nitrous Sold To Stand In Korea

Grade 1 winner and veteran sire Gemologist was sold to continue his stud career in Korea, while Grade 1-placed stakes winner Nitrous will begin his breeding career there, per Korea Racing Authority records.

Gemologist, a 13-year-old son of Tiznow arrived in the country on Dec. 10, 2021. He previously stood at Acadiana Equine at Copper Crowne in Louisiana for two seasons after entering stud at WinStar Farm in 2013. Gemologist also shuttled for a handful of Southern Hemisphere seasons in Chile.

From seven crops of racing age, Gemologist has sired 461 winners and amassed progeny earnings of more than $25.4 million.

His leading runner is Horologist, who retired a near-millionaire after a career that saw her win a trio of graded stakes races, including the Grade 2 Beldame Stakes.

Other runners of note by Gemologist include Grade 1 winner Yellow Agate, Grade 3 winners Miss Bigly, Theory, and Chilean Group 1 winner La Buena Vida.

Gemologist won five of seven starts during his own on-track career, and earned $794,855. He won each of his first five career starts, highlighted by victories in the G1 Wood Memorial Stakes and G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.

Nitrous, a 6-year-old son of Tapit, also arrived on Dec. 10 after finishing a career that saw him win four of 21 starts and earn $563,382.

Trained by Steve Asmussen for the partnership of Stonestreet Stables and breeder Winchell Thoroughbreds, Nitrous finished third in the G1 Hopeful Stakes as a juvenile, and he kicked off his 3-year-old season with a victory in the Riley Allison Derby at Sunland Park. He won the listed Bachelor Stakes at Oaklawn Park two starts later, then finished second by a neck in the G1 Woody Stephens Stakes, before being runner-up again in the G2 Amsterdam Stakes.

His 4-year-old campaign in 2020 featured a win in the Thanksgiving Classic Stakes at Fair Grounds, which followed a third-place effort in the G3 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes at Pimlico.

Nitrous is out of the Grade 3-placed multiple stakes-winning City Zip mare Speedinthruthecity.
