Former Chief Executive of the Irish Turf Club Cahir O'Sullivan passed away peacefully at his residence in Newbridge, Co. Kildare Tuesday. He was 86.
O'Sullivan was head of Irish racing's regulatory body-or Keeper of the Match Book, as the post was then known as–from 1976 to 1999, he became a member of the Turf Club in 2000 and two years later was also appointed a member of the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee. Managing director of a small manufacturing firm in Co. Limerick prior to joining the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, O'Sullivan was responsible for setting up the Budweiser sponsorship of the Irish Derby during his tenure at the Turf Club.
“He was someone who was respected by everyone in the industry and will be very much missed,” Brian Kavanagh, who succeeded O'Sullivan as Turf CEO in 1999, told the Irish Times.
O'Sullivan is survived by his children Jean, Yvonne, Richard and Gordon.
Mass will be held at 11a.m. Friday, Dec. 17 at St. Conleth's Parish Church. The Funeral Mass will be live streamed on https://newbridgeparish.ie/parish-church. The funeral to follow afterward at St. Conleth's Cemetery, Newbridge.
