Fireburn launched a torrid rally from last and won the AU$5 million Longines Golden Slipper Stakes (G1), the world's richest races for 2-year-olds, Saturday at Rosehill Gardens in Australia.
Ridden by Brenton Avdulla, the daughter of Rebel Dane overcame interference mid-race but appeared to have no chance of winning. But after finding running room on the fence, she came in the final furlong, collared front-running colt Best of Bordeaux, attempting to lead all the way, and then drove clear to triumph by 2 ½ lengths.
Favorite Coolangatta was a long neck away third.
Time for the race, run at about six furlongs, was 1:12.79 on turf rated as heavy.
The winner was knocked nearly sideways and was shuffled back after interference at the 700 meter mark before Avdulla deftly found passage through the field en route to her unlikely victory.
“I didn't know you could have that many emotions in 70 seconds,” trainer Gary Portelli, who won the 2017 Golden Slipper with She Will Reign, told the Sydney Morning Herald. “I was watching at her at the 700 (meter mark) and she got smashed.
“I dropped a couple of f-bombs and then looked for the colt (his other runner, Sejardan) and went off again because he was getting smashed as well.
“But coming to the turn I saw her coming up, and I know that when this filly has got something to chase, she gets it.
“At 300 (meters), I was believing it was going to happen again, and she roared home.”
Fireburn, who has won four of five starts, took home the AU$2.8 million winner's share, boosting her lifetime bankroll to AU$3,081,750.
Produced by the So You Think mare Mull Over, Fireburn is campaigned by a large partnership.
