Grade 1 winner Epicenter will undergo surgery Sunday morning at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital to repair a displaced condylar fracture to his right front leg after pulling up in this year's Breeders' Cup Classic.
Epicenter was stopped on the backstretch by rider Joel Rosario and vanned off wearing a splint to stabilize the leg.
According to an update from the Breeders' Cup Saturday evening, Epicenter is settled in for the night at the hospital ahead of the surgery by Dr. Larry Bramlage.
A condylar fracture refers to a vertical fracture toward the lower (distal) end of the cannon bone. Depending on the complexity of the fracture and whether or not the skin has been broken, these types of injuries can frequently be surgically repaired with one or more screws and/or plates.
Epicenter was coming to the race for trainer Steve Asmussen after winning the Grade 1 Travers and the G2 Jim Dandy before that. He was the runner-up in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness this year. He also won the G2 Louisiana Derby and G2 Risen Star this spring.
Asmussen trains Epicenter for Winchell Thoroughbreds. The 3-year-old was bred by Westwind and is by Not This Time out of Candy Ride Mare Silent Candy.
