Champion Monomoy Girl Points To Grade 2 Ruffian Stakes On July 11

2018's Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Monomoy Girl will run next in the Grade 2 Ruffian Stakes on July 11 at Belmont Park, trainer Brad Cox told the Thoroughbred Daily News this week.

The 5-year-old daughter of Tapizar returned off nearly an 18-month layoff to win an allowance race at Churchill Downs on May 16, and was briefly under consideration for this Saturday's G2 Fleur De Lis Handicap over nine furlongs. Instead, Monomoy Girl will head to the one-turn mile of the Ruffian, and a meeting with last year's Champion Older Dirt Female Midnight Bisou will be delayed until later in the season.

“She's really training well and we feel like the one-turn mile at Belmont will really suit her well right now and it gives us plenty of time between races,” Cox told the TDN. “The race just make sense. She's coming off a very long layoff, and we have to keep that in mind. She was off a year and a half. It's not like this is her second race back after a three-month layoff.”

A winner of 10 of her 12 lifetime starts, Monomoy Girl's current earnings stand at just over $3 million. Her year-end goal is the Breeders' Cup Distaff, Cox said.

Monmouth: Owners To Be Allowed To Watch Morning Workouts Starting June 26

Owners will be permitted to watch their horses work from a designated area at Monmouth Park from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Fridays through Sundays starting Friday, June 26, the track announced Tuesday.

Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. has been closed to all but essential personnel since March 16, when restrictions were put into place to slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The track opens for its 75th season of live racing on Friday, July 3.

Under a special permit that allows for re-purposing of restaurants under the state's Stage 2 loosening of restrictions to slow the pandemic, owners will be allowed to watch workouts only from a newly-created venue at the Blu Grotto, which is an all-weather tented section adjacent to Bluegrass mini-golf that abuts the racetrack.

To gain access, owners with a valid ID will enter through the Blu Grotto entrance on Port au Peck Avenue and will undergo temperature checks as well as a health questionnaire.

A day after announcing that it will be open to a limited number of fans when its racing season commences July 3, Monmouth Park announced Tuesday that owners will be permitted to watch their horses work from a designated area from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Fridays through Sundays starting Friday, June 26.

Indiana Stewards Suspend Jockey Gabriel Saez 30 Days For ‘Extreme Carelessness On The Racetrack’

Stewards at Indiana Grand in Shelbyville, Ind. handed down a 30-day suspension to jockey Gabriel Saez due to an incident he was involved in during the fourth race on June 17, reports the Daily Racing Form.

Aboard Justtequilatalkin in the 2-year-old maiden, Saez was out in front when his mount shifted toward the rail and caused three other horses and riders to fall. Jockey Joseph Ramos escaped unharmed, but Augustin Gomez broke his tibia and Albin Jiminez broke his eye socket and has five fractures in his back.

Two of the horses walked off the track, while a third was vanned off.

The stewards watched video replays of the race with Saez on June 18, and their ruling, handed down that same day, cites Saez for “extreme carelessness on the racetrack.” The suspension was to begin on June 22, and Saez is not named aboard any mounts at Indiana Grand this week, but the jockey is appealing to the Indiana Racing Commission and has requested a stay of his suspension.

Saez is named on horses at Churchill Downs beginning Thursday, June 25, and is booked to ride multiple graded stakes winner By My Standards in Saturday's Grade 2, $500,000 Stephen Foster Stakes beneath the Twin Spires.
