Galileo’s Son of Mecca’s Angel a New Rising Star

The Curragh played host to another TDN Rising Star on Sunday as Ballydoyle’s newcomer Hudson River (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) made all to take the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden with the promise of much to come. Showing dash from the break to gain the lead and rail advantage under Seamie Heffernan, the first foal out of the dual G1 Nunthorpe S. heroine Mecca’s Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who was the 3-1 joint-favourite was always doing enough in front and at the line had a comfortable 1 1/2-length margin to spare over Ace Aussie (Ire) (Australia {GB}), with the winner’s stablemate Wembley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) a nose away in third. “He’s a lovely colt and was just ready to start,” Aidan O’Brien said. “He could go to the [Newmarket] July meeting. He’ll probably end up a miler and it was a nice race to start him in.”

Mecca’s Angel was a useful juvenile, but it was not until she matured that she truly developed into a leading light in the sprinting brigade. Building on wins in the G3 World Trophy and G3 Prix de Saint-Georges to deny Acapulco (Scat Daddy) in the 2015 G1 Nunthorpe S., she returned to the York the following season to bring up a famous brace. She is a full-sister to Shadwell’s Markaz (Ire), who was successful in the G3 Criterion S. and G3 Chipchase S. and who had got off the mark with his first crop a week earlier. A granddaughter of another speedy individual in the G3 Prix d’Arenberg scorer and G3 Norfolk S. runner-up Desert Dawn (GB) (Belfort {Fr}), Mecca’s Angel has produced two daughters of Galileo in 2019 and 2020.

Chrono Genesis Streets Ahead In Takarazuka Kinen

The 4-year-old filly Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) was the second choice in the betting for Sunday’s G1 Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin, but at the finish line there was no doubting who was number one, with the Sunday Racing colourbearer establishing her dominance with a race record six-length victory and earning a spot in the Nov. 7 GI Breeders’ Cup Turf.

After finishing third in the opening two races of last year’s fillies’ Triple Crown, the G1 Oka Sho and the G1 Yushun Himba, Chrono Genesis collected her first Group 1 title in the third leg, the G1 Shuka Sho, in October before running a respectable fifth against older mares in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. She opened her season with a win in the G2 Kyoto Kinen on Feb. 16 and finished a neck second in the G1 Osaka Hai on Apr. 5.

Breaking from gate 16 of 18, Chrono Genesis was able to get within three paths of the fence by the time they hit the first bend and established a position about six lengths off the lead. Chrono Genesis began to circle runners rounding the final turn and found herself four-wide and among the leaders as they straightened. Despite the rain-softened ground she employed an eye-catching turn of foot to draw clear and never appeared in danger in the lane, leaving the 2017 G1 Kikuka Sho victor Kiseki (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) to settle for second once again.

“The filly broke smoothly and we were able to travel in good rhythm in good striking position,” said jockey Yuichi Kitamura. “I didn’t really have to urge her to go but she just went spontaneously. She was responding really well so I knew that she would stretch well in the lane. She has become a powerful filly and was in very good condition. She was really strong.”

Chrono Genesis is the eighth foal out of the winning 3-year-old Chronologist (Jpn) (Kurofune), who one year prior had produced the G1 Victoria Mile winner Normcore (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}). Chrono Genesis and Normcore are the only two black-type winners under the first two dams, while the former champion 2-year-old Fusaichi Richard (Jpn) (Kurofune) appears under the third dam amidst a smattering of minor stakes winners.

Kingman’s Persian King Back To Winning Ways In the Muguet

Upset on his return when second in the Listed Prix de Montretout over a mile at Chantilly June 10, Godolphin and Ballymore Thoroughbred Ltd’s Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) was back in shape and on track in Sunday’s G2 Prix du Muguet at Saint-Cloud. Taken straight to the lead by Pierre-Charles Boudot, last year’s G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains hero was threatened and briefly headed by the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil winner Pretreville (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) passing two out. Quickly regaining the advantage, the 3-5 favourite finished full of running to beat that rival by 1 1/4 lengths, with 3/4 of a length back to Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in third.

“I knew after his last race that he would come on a lot for it and that’s exactly what happened,” Boudot said. “He was very relaxed in front and when they made their move and he was slightly outpaced but then he quickened and showed a very nice action. I still had something left at the end, he was far from finished so that’s a very good sign and also we know he’ll go a bit further.” Making his first appearance since finishing runner-up in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club when caught out in the Montretout, the imposing Persian King can now go back to the top level after two sharpeners. That could come in the G1 Prix d’Ispahan at Chantilly July 19 according to Boudot. “I think his next target is the Prix d’Ispahan and I am sure that another furlong will be okay for him,” he added.

Persian King’s dam Pretty Please (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) is a three-parts sister to the G1 Prix Ganay hero Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and a half to the dual listed winner Pilote d’Essai (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The third dam Palmeraie (Lear Fan) is kin to three black-type winners, most notably the GII Long Island H. heroine Peinture Bleue (Alydar) who later produced the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero and leading sire Peintre Celebre.

Back To Two Turns, Galilean Wins Soi Phet Stakes At Los Alamitos

A stretch to two turns and a return to Los Alamitos in Cypress, Calif., proved the winning moves for Galilean as he rolled to an easy victory in the $101,500 Soi Phet Stakes on Saturday.

Trained by John Sadler for West Point Thoroughbreds, Denise Barker, William Sandbrook, John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith, the 4-year-old stalked the early pace from his outside post, then powered away in the final quarter of a mile to win by four lengths under jockey Juan Hernandez.

The score in 1:35.49 for the mile was the first for the son of Uncle Mo and the El Prado mare Fresia since he captured the California Cup Derby Feb. 18, 2019, at Santa Anita when trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer.

He's now 4-for-9 lifetime with earnings of $442,948. Three of those victories – in as many starts – have come at Los Alamitos. Galilean captured the Barretts Juvenile in his career debut here Sept. 22, 2018, then won the King Glorious – at the Soi Phet distance – by nine lengths nearly three months later.

The even-money favorite against seven other horses bred or sired in California, Galilean paid $4, $3.40 and $3.

Grinning Tiger, fresh off a 92-1 upset in the Crystal Water Stakes on turf three weeks earlier, finished a head in front of 18-1 outsider Brandothebartender to complete the exacta. Dismissed at 12-1 Saturday, Grinning Tiger returned $8.20 and $5 while the show price on Brandothebartender was $4.60.

Completing the order of finish were Loud Mouth, King Abner, the 5-2 second choice, pacesetter Take the One O One, Lymebyrd and Three Ay Em.

“I talked to (Sadler) this morning and he told me to try and sit just outside the speed,'' said Hernandez after his first Los Alamitos stakes success. “This horse relaxed perfectly and I wanted to wait until the stretch to make a move and he exploded when I asked him. He was lugging in some, but I corrected him and he was very strong at the end.''

Alex Bisono, an assistant to Sadler, thinks the stretch to eight furlongs was crucial for Galilean.

“I definitely think he's a better two turn horse,'' he said. “He likes this track. He was comfortable the whole way. I wish he had run a little bit straighter down the stretch, but he didn't bother anybody because he was clear.''

Racing resumes Sunday at Los Alamitos. Post time is 1 p.m.
