Virtual International Conference Of Horseracing Authorities To Focus On COVID-19 Impact

In place of its traditional in-person meeting, the 54th International Conference of Horseracing Authorities, organized by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), will be virtual in 2020. The conference is typically held in Paris, France, the day after the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), but in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it will instead be conducted as a series of videos released during the first two weeks of October.

The conference will feature a sequence of pre-recorded Zoom discussions with prominent racing executives, participants, and stakeholders who have been conducting horseracing during the pandemic as well as insights from other leading sports figures.

“While we will certainly miss having everyone in Paris this year, it was clear that the safest course of action was to host our annual conference virtually as a result of COVID-19,” said IFHA Chairman Louis Romanet. “The pandemic has affected every aspect of life, and we felt it was important to focus on it as the key topic for the conference in this unique year. We hope to return to our traditional format in 2021.”

The key note address will be delivered by Pete Giorgio and Alan Switzer from Deloitte, the largest global professional services network.

Giorgio, a principal with Deloitte Consulting LLP, leads the company's United States sports practice, serving multiple sports clients including the United States Golf Association, National Basketball Association (NBA), United States Tennis Association, and United States Olympic Committee.

He is the co-author of Deloitte's 2020 report Games without fans: How sports organizations can thrive now, and in the long term as well as the co-author of the April 2020 report Understanding the impact of COVID-19 on telecommunications, media, and entertainment organizations: Sports subsector.

Switzer is a director in the Sports Business Group, Deloitte's global centre of excellence in sport business. He has worked extensively in horseracing for over 15 years, including producing multiple Economic Impact studies on racing—notably in respective of British and Irish racing.

They will discuss the findings from Deloitte's research and experience into the impact of COVID-19 on the sports sector, including the practical steps that sports organizations can take to adapt to the “new normal”, opportunities arising from the challenging circumstances and how that advice can be tailored to horseracing organizations.

Additionally, Rishi Persad will moderate four panels featuring industry members from across the globe who will discuss the impact of the pandemic on horseracing both regionally and internationally. Sessions will examine sustaining the business of racing and sports in the midst of a global pandemic and economic uncertainty; adapting the broadcast, production, and media experience to a COVID-19 racing and sporting landscape; participating and working in racing during a global pandemic; and preparing for and sustaining racing post-COVID 19.

Among the panelists scheduled to take part are: Charlie Appleby (trainer), Victoria Carter (New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing), Stephen Cook (IMG), Francesca Cumani (ITV), Olivier Delloye (France Galop), William Derby (York Racecourse), Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges (Hong Kong Jockey Club), Horacio Esposito (OSAF & Latin American Racing Channel), Drew Fleming (Breeders' Cup), Katherine Ford, (Equidia), Andrew Harding (Hong Kong Jockey Club), Rob Hyland (NBC Sports), Brian Kavanagh (Horse Racing Ireland), Ger Lyons (trainer), Annamarie Phelps (British Horseracing Authority), Zac Purton (jockey), Jason Richardson (Ch7/Racing.com), Shigeru Suzuki (Japan Racing Association), and Chris Waller (trainer).

The videos from the International Conference of Horseracing Authorities will be posted on the IFHA's website and social media platforms starting the 5th of October.

The first International Conference of Horseracing Authorities was organized and hosted by the Société d'Encouragement in Paris, France, on October 9, 1967. Since 1994, the annual conference has been organized by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities at France Galop. In 2019, the conference convened delegates from more than 50 different countries with a number of other racing executives and media members in attendance.

Unbeaten Princess Noor Towers Over Competition In Chandelier

With three out of the five runners in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., Bob Baffert would appear to “have 'em surrounded” indeed, as his budding starlet Princess Noor fairly towers over her competitors, based upon two impressive tallies at Del Mar over the summer.

To be run for the 52nd time and won by Baffert a record 11 times, the Chandelier will be contested at a mile and one sixteenth.

Baffert will also be represented by Illumination, who was third, beaten 8 3/4 lengths by Princess Noor in the G1 Del Mar Debutante and by Varda, who was a speedy first out maiden winner going six furlongs on Aug. 30.

Trainer Mark Casse will be represented by two-time Saratoga graded stakes placed filly Make Mischief, a New York-bred daughter of red hot sire Into Mischief, who will try two turns for the first time in her fifth career start.

The Chandelier is a Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” Challenge Race qualifier, with the winner earning a fees-paid berth into the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland on Nov. 6.

PRINCESS NOOR
Owner:  Zedan Racing Stables, Inc.
Trainer:  Bob Baffert

A $1,350,000 Florida 2-year-old in training sale purchase in April, she's done little wrong in two starts, taking her 5 1/2-furlong debut by 2 1/2 lengths at 3-5 on Aug. 22 and crushing five rivals by 6 1/2 lengths at 3-5 in the G1 Del Mar Debutante going seven furlongs on Sept. 6.  With Baffert sending in the plays in the morning and afternoon, regular rider Victor Espinoza would appear to be first and goal with plenty of time left aboard Princess Noor on Saturday.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Berth On The Line In Friday’s Shadwell Rockfel Stakes

Ms. Susan Lynas' Santosha (IRE) will bid to get her season back on track in Friday's Shadwell Rockfel Stakes (G2) at Newmarket. She is one of five 2-year-old fillies in the 7-furlong contest, which offers a guaranteed fees-paid berth into the US$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) as part of the ”Win and You're In” international Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge is a series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into corresponding races of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on Nov. 6-7.

Santosha provided young trainer David Loughnane with the biggest win of his career when landing the Princess Margaret Stakes (G3) at Ascot in July and Loughnane believes her latest run, an eighth-place finish in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (G2) on Aug. 20, can be ignored.

Loughnane said: “The Lowther was just one race too many for her. She got very wound up in the paddock before and then fell asleep a bit in the stalls and missed the kick. She has had a nice break since York. We feel that she has every right to be here and hopefully we can get her season back on track.”

When asked whether Santosha could head to Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, Loughnane said: “Every race is on the table for her but we'll take it one race at a time. We certainly wouldn't turn our noses up at the Breeders' Cup if it was the right option for her.”

Aidan O'Brien has won the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes three times in his career, most recently with Just Wonderful, who won the 2018 renewal before going on to finish fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs. He relies on Ballylynch Stud/Irish EBF Ingabelle Stakes listed winner Monday, bred in Kentucky by Chelston, Orpendale & Wynatt, in Friday's contest. Monday is the first foal out of Group 1-winning juvenile Ballydoyle (IRE). She will be ridden by Ryan Moore.

Isabella Giles (IRE), a 7-length winner of the Ladbrokes Prestige Stakes (G3) at Goodwood last time, has won three of her four career starts, with her only defeat coming at the hands of Santosha in the Princess Margaret Stakes. She is trained by Clive Cox and will be ridden by Adam Kirby.

Last year's Rockfel winner, Daahyeh (GB), went on to finish second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. Her trainer Roger Varian, saddles Nazuna (IRE), a Kodiac (GB) filly who was second on her latest start at Doncaster.

The field is completed by Alba Rose (GB), a decisive winner of a novice stakes race over 7-furlongs at Thirsk. Mark Johnston trains the daughter of Muhaarar (GB), who will once again be ridden by Joe Fanning.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, the Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the winner of the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, which will be run at 1-mile over the Keeneland turf course. Breeders' Cup also will provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must already be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 26 to receive the rewards.

The 10-horse field includes Liam's Pride, winner of the Gold Fever on a sloppy Belmont strip in July; popular 11-time winner T Loves a Fight; and the talented Hidden Scroll returning to the main track following off-the-board efforts on turf for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

Action then shifts to historic Churchill Downs for the second leg [Race 8, 4:21 p.m. Eastern] where a field of 10 allowance optional-claiming fillies and mares will travel a one-turn mile on the main track. Joy Epifora, a Group 1 winner in her native Argentina, returns to the main track for trainer Ignacio Correas, IV to face a talented group that includes multiple graded-stakes placed Gold Standard for trainer Brad Cox; and half-million earner Talk Veuve to Me, a graded stakes winner trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen.

Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown sends out the talented troika of Viadera, Blowout and Noor Sahara to square off against the improving Feel Glorious, who searches for her first graded stakes win for conditioner Christophe Clement.

The penultimate leg from Churchill Downs [Race 9, 4:53 p.m.], the Grade 3, $100,000 Ack Ack, will see a field of 13 traverse a one-turn mile on the main track. Leading the charge is $1.3 million earner Mr. Money, a 4-year-old son of Goldencents trained by Bret Calhoun sporting a record of three wins from five starts at the Louisville oval. Steep opposition will be provided by Calumet Farm's Everfast, runner-up in last year's Grade 1 Preakness; and Grade 3 Razorback champ Warrior's Charge, a five-time winner for trainer Brad Cox who was elevated to first last out in the Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin at Monmouth Park.

The sequence concludes at Belmont Park in Race 9 at 5:14 p.m. with the Grade 2, $150,000 Vosburgh, a six-furlong sprint led by six-time graded-stakes winning millionaire Firenze Fire for trainer Kelly Breen. Opposition in the six-horse field is led by the John Terranova-trained pair of Funny Guy and Stan the Man.
