Five Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races At Longchamp On Sunday’s Arc Card

Breeders' Cup Ltd., and France Galop are once again proud to announce that five Group 1 races at ParisLongchamp for the world-renowned Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe day on Oct. 4 will be part of the 2020 Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge, now in its 14th year, is an international series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid for corresponding races in the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held on Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky.

The 1 ½-mile Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, is the centrepiece of the international spectacle on the ParisLongchamp program. For the second consecutive year, the winner of Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe will receive an automatic berth into the US$4 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1), which will also be run at 1 ½ mile at Keeneland. Prince Khalid Abdullah's Enable (GB) became the first horse to win the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same year, which she accomplished in 2018.

Top turf sprinters will be in action in the 5-furlong Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp Longines, with the winner receiving a “Win and You're In” position into the 5 ½ furlongs, US$1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1).

An automatic berth into the 1 3/16-mile, US$2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) will be awarded to the winner of the 1 ¼-mile Prix de l'Opéra Longines.

There will also be two “Win and You're In” races for 2-year-olds on the Arc day program. The 7-furlong Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère will give the winner a free placement into the 1-mile, US$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), and the winner of the 1-mile Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac, for 2-year-old fillies, will earn an automatic starting position into the 1-mile, US$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

As part of the enhanced benefits to horsemen competing in the series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees and guarantee a starting position in a corresponding Championships race for winners of all Challenge races. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 26 to receive the rewards, and those rewards must be used in the year they are earned.

Breeders' Cup also will provide a $40,000 travel stipend to the connections of all Championship starters from outside of North America.

The five Arc day races are among the seven total Breeders' Cup Challenge races in France this year.

Two “Win and You're In” races were held at Deauville. On Aug. 16, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum's 3-year-old Palace Pier won the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard Jacques le Marois (G1) and earned an automatic berth into the US$2 million FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile Presented by PDJF (G1). On Aug. 23, Stonestreet Stables' 2-year-old filly Campanelle (IRE) captured the Darley Prix Morny (G1) at Deauville and secured a free starting position into the US$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2).

Trainer Angel Montano Dies In Louisville Hospital At Age 80

Longtime Kentucky-based trainer Angel Montano passed away in a hospital in Louisville on Thursday, according to the Daily Racing Form. He was 80 years old, and had been hospitalized for much of the past six months. Montano died of multiple health complications including COVID-19.

Initially an apprentice jockey when he came to the U.S. from Mexico in 1956, Montano was injured and took out his training license in 1961. Montano trained 1,390 winners over his career, and was the leading trainer at Churchill Downs' spring meet for three straight years, 1976-1978.

“He lived a great life,” one of his seven children, Joey Montano, told drf.com. “Such a character. He loved telling jokes but wasn't very good at it, and that was funny in itself. He loved the horses and all the people at the track and was incredibly loyal to his employees. Think about it – more than 60 years on the track.”

OBS October Sale Supplemental Catalog Now Online

The supplemental catalog for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 October Sale is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com and available in printed form at the OBS sales grounds on or about Wednesday, Oct. 7. The two-day sale is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 13 and 14.

Three 2-year-olds and two Horses of Racing Age have been supplemented to the two-day sale, and will sell as Hip No.'s 55 – 59. Twenty-seven selected yearlings have been supplemented and will sell as Hip No.'s 243 – 269. Twenty-eight horses have been added to the Open Yearling Sale, selling as Hip No.'s 694 – 721.

The sale begins Tuesday, Oct. 13 at noon with the 2-year-olds in training and horses of racing age section, cataloged as Hip No.'s 1 – 59. The Selected Yearling Sale begins immediately following the horses of racing Age, selling as Hip No.'s 101 – 269. The open yearling sale, now cataloged as Hip No.'s 301 – 721, is set for Wednesday, Oct. 14 and will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The under tack show for the 2-year-olds and horses of racing age is set for Sunday, Oct. 11 and will start at 10 a.m.

The under tack show and sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF, TDN and BloodHorse websites.

Buyers will be able to go to the OBS website and register to gain bidding approval, then access the OBS Bidding Screen with their credentials. Beau Greely Dies at 49

Christopher Beau Greely, a fourth-generation trainer with deep Kentucky ties, passed away Sept. 30 in Redondo Beach, Calif., after a short illness. He was 49.

A Kentucky native, Greely, who went by his middle name, had long-time roots in the horse business. With his brother, John J. Greely IV, who passed away earlier this year at 54, Greely founded Wintergreen Stallion Station. His father, John “Bud” Greely III, owned Wintergreen Farm near Midway, Ky. Their uncle, Bill Greely, was president of Keeneland from 1986-2000.

Greely worked for Criquette Head in France and Richard Mandella in California before going out on his own in 1997. Among his more successful runners were MGISW Borrego (El Prado {Ire}), whom he also bred and owned in partnership, MGISW Manndar (Ire) (Doyoun {Ire}), GISW Sligo Bay (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), MGSW & MGISP Tres Borrachos (Ecton Park), and MGSW & GISP Five Star Day (Carson City), who later stood at Wintergreen Stallion Station.

In recent years, Greely, who left training completely in 2015, was an underwater and art photographer.

Greely is survived by his father, the aforementioned Bud, and his mother, Ann Evans Greely; as well as three children, Christopher Beau Greely II, Jacqueline Greely, and Margaux Greely; his sisters Shannon Totty and Laura Whitworth; the mother of his children, Heidi Marsh; a special friend, Tracy Stephenson; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 protocols, the burial at Calvary Cemetery in Lexington will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Lexington location of God’s Food Pantry at 1685 Jaggie Fox Way.
