TSN, Woodbine Bringing Back ‘Racing Night Live’ This Fall

TSN and Woodbine Entertainment announced Friday that the exciting live horse racing series RACING NIGHT LIVE returns to Canada's Sports Leader this fall. Moving to the network's marquee Friday night timeslot, RACING NIGHT LIVE kicks off Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. ET on TSN, featuring even more live races each week.

A complete schedule of TSN's RACING NIGHT LIVE coverage is available at TSN.ca (schedule subject to change).

The two-hour weekly show will now feature at least three Thoroughbred races (depending on the number of races on the card) from Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, and four Standardbred races (up from three) from Woodbine Mohawk Park in Milton, Ontario.

Viewers across Canada have been joining in on RACING NIGHT LIVE action and wagering on live races through Woodbine's new easy-to-use horse racing app Dark Horse. Broadcasts have also featured a slate of performances from top Canadian musical artists.

“Racing Night Live has been such a tremendous opportunity for horse racing to connect with a new audience in a dynamic way,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment.  “We are thrilled to partner with TSN to bring Racing Night Live back in an even bigger way.”

Weekly editions of RACING NIGHT LIVE are produced through a partnership between Woodbine Entertainment, TSN, and Dome Productions. The show is hosted by TSN's Laura Diakun and Woodbine Entertainment's Jason Portuondo, with Brodie Lawson and Chad Rozema contributing reports from track level.

RACING NIGHT LIVE complements TSN's live broadcast coverage of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown. The Queen's Plate champion Mighty Heart won the Prince of Wales Stakes last week and now holds the first two jewels of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown. Should Mighty Heart win the Breeders' Stakes, airing on Saturday, October 24 live on TSN, he would become the first OLG Canadian Triple Crown winner since Wando won it in 2003.

Governing Bodies Develop Horse Movement Proposal

A proposal on cross-border horse movement between EU Member States and Britain once the latter exits the European Union has been sent to Michel Barnier, the European Commission’s head of task force for relations with the United Kingdom; and to Lord Frost, the British Prime Minister’s Europe adviser and chief negotiator of Task Force Europe.

The proposal includes the use of digital passports to facilitate international transport with full traceability and sanitary guarantees as well as immediate access to vaccination and medical records of guaranteed high-health status horses; and zero tariffs, which currently apply but would be extended to include geldings. The digital equine passports can also be adopted for use between EU Member States and A-listed third countries.

The task force is seeking to have its proposals captured in the text of both the Trade Agreement and in the EU Animal Health Law, which comes into force on Apr. 21, 2021. Should a trade agreement with Britain not be reached, the task force is asking the EU to declare an equilibrium of health status for A-listed third countries.

“The equine industry is of crucial importance to the economic, social, sporting and cultural fabric of both the European Union and the United Kingdom, and as representatives from all sectors of that industry, we believe that there are simple solutions that can guarantee a secure future for the European equine industry”, said Ingmar De Vos said, president of the International Horse Sports Confederation, a collaboration between the global governing bodies for equestrian sport and racing. “It is one of the most important animal breeding and production sectors in Europe, larger and with greater economic impact and employment than a number of other European agricultural sectors, with a net worth of over €52-billion per annum, providing 210,000 direct and more than 500,000 indirect jobs.

“Our goal is to reach an agreement that will allow for a continuation of the historical expedited movement of horses for breeding, sale and competition between EU Member States and Britain. While there are some sectors currently under discussion that seem to remain difficult in the negotiations, we believe that there are simple solutions within the equine industry that can be readily included in a Free Trade Agreement. Indeed, they are also workable even in a no deal scenario.

“We are asking the negotiators on both sides of the table to take our proposals on board and incorporate them into the texts of the Trade Agreement, if there is one, and the EU to include them in the incoming EU Animal Health Law, which comes into effect next April. Without agreement on this, we estimate that the industry in Europe could shrink by as much as a third, with a potential €17-billion reduction in economic contribution, and the potential loss of 250,000 jobs in a marketplace already threatened with critical unemployment levels and a significant reduction in foreign direct investment in the European Union as the economic focus shifts to North America and Asia. So failure is not an option.”

A Pain In The Neck Isn’t Necessarily Equine Osteoarthritis

A new study from the Ontario Veterinary College has found that X-rays alone do not provide sufficient evidence for diagnosing Cervical Facet disease, a form of osteoarthritis.

Dr. Judith Koenig notes that osteoarthritis is common in many athletes, especially as they age. Bone spurs may develop and cause the facets to grow larger, and inflammation around the facet joints can affect nerve roots and soft tissue. Overuse or neck instability can also cause the joint to remodel.

Clinical signs of osteoarthritis in the neck include stiff neck with a limited range of motion and atrophy in the lower neck. Some horses with osteoarthritis of the neck may show front-end lameness that does not respond to leg nerve blocks.

Prior studies had shown that X-rays indicated osteoarthritic changes of the neck in nearly 50 percent of horses that were between 6 and 8 years old who had no other clinical signs of osteoarthritis. This finding caused many horses to fail pre-purchase exams. Koenig created a study to explore the significance of these changes that seem to affect so many horses.

Koenig's study showed that there are differing opinions among veterinarians on how to classify the stage of osteoarthritis the X-rays show. Koenig noted that this was a reason why veterinarians should not rely solely on information the X-rays provide, but should take the X-rays in context with other clinical signs.

New Bay’s Saffron Beach Wins the Oh So Sharp

Having impressed when scoring on debut in a seven-furlong Sept. 26 Newmarket maiden, Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) returned to the same course and distance to enhance her reputation in Friday’s G3 Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp S. at Newmarket. Settled in second early by Adam Kirby, the 9-4 favourite took over passing the two-furlong pole and asserted for a half-length success from Thank You Next (Ire) (No Nay Never), with Shine For You (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third. “She’s quite a nice filly and a strong galloper,” the winning rider said. “She’s a filly with a good mind as well, as she was backed up relatively quickly and will be a lovely prospect for next year.”

Saffron Beach, whose task was made easier here by the withdrawal of the G2 Rockfel S. second Nazuna (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and the flop of the G3 Weld Park S. runner-up Thinking of You (American Pharoah), could be off to Keeneland with trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam eyeing the Breeders’ Cup. “That was very good and the staff at home have done a wonderful job,” she said. “She is a quick learner and I’d love to have a crack at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, if the owners will allow me. We know she is good. I had Annie Skates who was second in the Juvenile Fillies’ race at the Breeders’ Cup and this one is probably a quicker learner than Annie. For what she has done at home, we thought this was a suitable step up in grade.”

Sporting the Ben Sangster silks and owned in partnership with James Wigan, Saffron Beach is out of the Godolphin Polytrack winner Falling Petals (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) who was bought by the China Horse Club at the 2016 Goffs November Sale for €235,000. She is a daughter of the dual stakes-placed Infinite Spirit (Maria’s Mon) who also threw the G3 Criterion S. winner and G1 Middle Park S. third Huntdown (Elusive Quality). His full-sister Continua is the dam of three stakes performers headed by the smart sprinter Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who captured the G3 World Trophy and G3 Molecomb S. and was placed in the G1 Kings Stand S. and GII Nearctic S. A granddaughter of the G3 Matron S. winner and G1 Coronation S. and GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup runner-up Eternal Reve (Diesis {GB}), Falling Petals’ son of Cotai Glory’s sire Exceed and Excel sells on Monday at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2. She also has a 2020 filly by Australia (GB).
