Authorized Colt Leads Closing Session Of Tattersalls October Book 3

Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale came to a close with a strong final session to mirror the resilient trade across Books 1 and 2, and resulted in rises in turnover and median and a clearance rate of 85 percent.

The top lot on the second and final day of Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale came late in the evening when the Authorized colt out of the New Approach mare Sweet Rose was knocked down to Alex Elliot for 90,000 guineas (US$122,068). The sale represented the fifth-highest price over the two days of Book 3.

Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment, the half-brother to the Listed winner Scentasia was the subject of a prolonged bidding duel between Elliot and Jedd O'Keefe. The colt's granddam White Rose and great granddam Wild Romance were both champion 2-year-olds in Germany.

“Long day waiting for this chap, but worth waiting for him!” exclaimed Elliot. “He is going to go to Ireland for a client, he has got lots of options. He is by a sire that we love, they don't make them in Europe anyway as Authorized is in Turkey. This colt could run next year on the flat – he is a brother to a 106 rated filly – or we can keep him and we can go the National Hunt route.

“He is a beautiful horse, had a great outlook, vetted good, and also has French premiums so the list of options is endless.”

Tate Strikes for Night Of Thunder Colt

The second highest price on the second day of October Book 3 was achieved by the Night Of Thunder colt out of the Rock of Gibraltar mare Moonstone Rock who was knocked down to trainer James Tate for 46,000 guineas (US$62,382) on behalf of Rabbah Bloodstock.

“Obviously Night Of Thunder has done incredibly well so we were looking for his stock,” said Tate. “We thought he was a really lovely example of the stallion and really liked the way he walked around the ring. Fingers crossed he will be a good horse.”

Sean Gollogly with his son, also Sean, bred the April-born first foal who was sold by Eric Cantillon's Plumton Hall Stud.

“I am delighted for the Golloglys,” said Cantillon. “It is a great price. We have had the horse since January when he was weaned and he has always been a nice horse, but the price has surprised us. The stallion has been doing very well and perhaps it was good to be a big fish in a small pond.

“They are small breeders near Epsom and it is great for them, the Golloglys are very good friends.”

Night Of Thunder is the leading second-crop sire in Europe and his first two crops have featured 17 group/listed winners and 26 stakes performers.

Time Test Filly to Nick Bradley Racing

The top-priced filly of the day was a daughter of first crop stallion Time Test out of the Canford Cliffs mare Leap of Joy, who was knocked down to Nick Bradley Racing for 45,000 guineas (US$61,026). She was sold by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of breeder Marston Stud.

“She had a Book 1 physical to my mind,” said Bradley, adding: “The 45,000 guineas was more than I wanted to spend and underbidder Federico Barberini is a fair judge, and generally if I am on one then he is on one, and he made me pay! She is a belting physical and she will join Richard Fahey.”

Time Test, who stands at The National Stud in Newmarket, was a two-time Group 2 winner for Roger Charlton and was placed in the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes. He is a son of Dubawi whose sons at stud include the 'hot' young stallions Night of Thunder and New Bay.

“It is all testament to everyone who used Time Test,” said The National Stud's Tim Lane. “We all know what can happen in the spring and coming through to the autumn. He stamps them, they have got the Dubawi middle, great action and very good minds.”

Bradley, who has enjoyed a spectacular year on the racecourse in 2020, has had a busy sales season having bought “20-something” yearlings and commented:

“I have sold nearly all of them already. Everything I bought in Book 2 has sold out, I own 22 fillies and not one colt. My theory is that if I won the Dewhurst, it would have to be by a fashionable stallion then I would want to be selling the horse on and then the owners say 'why are you trying to sell it on?'

“If we won the Cheveley Park or the Fillies' Mile the value will be there all the time, then I won't be in a rush to sell them and the owners can live out their dreams. The GB bonus helps as well – we complain about prize-money but there is twenty grand there for winning a race.”

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale comes to a conclusion with Book 4 starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Country Life’s Christy Holden Named Finalist for Leadership Award in Breeding

Congratulations to Christy Holden, a finalist in the Leadership Award in Breeding category of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEA), presented by Godolphin. Holden has been the general manager of Maryland’s Country Life Farm, including its Merryland division, since 2015 after first working at Country Life 30 years prior as a teenager. She eventually returned to Country Life in 2004, beginning in the office and working her way up to broodmare manager and finally general manager. Holden, who has also served on the board of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association (MHBA) since 2018, works closely with Country Life owners and brothers Josh and Mike Pons and calls them her mentors.

Other finalists for the Leadership Award in Breeding are Wayne Clem of Claiborne Farm and Matt Lyons of Candy Meadows Farm, who will also be recognized on these pages in the coming days. The Leadership Award in Breeding is presented annually to an individual who displays exceptional leadership qualities while in a managerial or supervisory position on a Thoroughbred farm.

A total of seven award categories will be honored by TIEA for 2020. Maria Cristina Silva of New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (NYTHA) has already been announced as the winner of the Community Award, while the winners in the other categories will be announced live in a virtual ceremony hosted by Jill Bryne and streamed at the TDN homepage Thursday, Nov. 5, at 12:00 p.m. ET. All finalists will be spotlighted in TDN in the days leading up to the ceremony.

Gulfstream West: Bodexpress Poses A ‘Single’ Question To Rainbow 6 Bettors On Saturday

A quick glance at the past performance lines for Saturday's Race 9 feature at Gulfstream Park West is all that is needed to figure out that Bodexpress will be a rather imposing horse to beat.

Bodexpress is rated as the 4-5 morning-line favorite against five rivals in the 1 1/16-mile optional claiming allowance for good reason, having placed in multiple graded stakes, including the 2019 Florida Derby (G1), in which he finished second to Maximum Security, at Gulfstream Park.

So, naturally, the Gustavo Delgado-trained 4-year-old colt is a no-brainer Rainbow 6 'single,' right? …Right?? …Right???

OK, so maybe Bodexpress hasn't always been the most reliable betting proposition during his career; OK, so maybe he became a fan favorite as much through his sometimes erratic bad-boy behavior as his abundant talent; OK, so maybe the son of Bodemeister did rear up and unseat Hall of Famer John Velazquez leaving the starting gate in last year's Preakness Stakes (G1) and led the outrider on a merry chase around the Pimlico racetrack during the race.

But … if bettors take a stand that Bodexpress will behave himself Saturday, a 'single' in Race 9 will offer them better opportunities to 'spread' in the other five legs in the Rainbow 6, which will offer a jackpot pool guarantee of $250,000 after going unsolved for the first 10 days of the Fall Turf Festival Meet. After all, Bodexpress has made himself right at home at Gulfstream Park West, where he is based when he isn't on the road for stakes engagements.

The Kentucky-bred colt is undefeated in two starts at Gulfstream Park West. He broke his maiden in his eighth career race last October in his comeback race from his Preakness disaster. He came right back to break the track record for a mile while scoring by 6 ¾ lengths a month later, registering a career-best speed figure that towers over the best numbers put up by his Saturday foes.

Can't bring yourself to 'single' him? How about taking a stab with the only horse in the field to beat Bodexpress? Identifier scored a 60-1 upset over third-place finisher Bodexpress in the March 28 Hal's Hope (G3) at Gulfstream but has gone winless in three subsequent starts. How about Blewitt? The namesake of Gulfstream analyst Jason Blewitt returns to Gulfstream, where he scored an optional claiming allowance April 9 before losing four straight in New York.

Of course, there are five other competitive Rainbow 6 legs to review before deciding whether to 'single' Bodexpress, include a 'saver' or 'toss' him in Race 9.

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 sequence will span Race 5-10 Saturday, kicking off with a 1 1/16-mile turf race for $12,500 claimers that have gone winless since April 17. Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Keep Quiet, who lost by a neck as a beaten favorite last time out, is the 8-5 favorite in a field of 10. Trainer Jenna Antonucci, who is 2-for-4 at the GPW meet, will be represented by Basha, who finished third against better at Kentucky Downs last time out. Can't Trump Kitten drops down after racing competitively in starter optional claiming company.

Race 6, a 6 ½-furlong sprint for $16,000 claiming maidens, drew a field of 10, including first-time starters trained by David Fawkes and Kathleen O'Connell. Fawkes-trained Include the Beast is daughter of The Big Beast, while O'Connell-trained Hot Babe is a daughter of Fury Kapcori. Leading jockey Edgard Zayas returns aboard Piper, who produced an improved third-place effort in her second career start while dropping to the $16,000 claiming level. Antonio Sano-trained Pink Fizz, who most recently finished a spot behind Piper after experiencing trouble at the start while making her debut.

Sandra Matier-trained Fast Fraction has been installed as a strong 7-5 morning-line favorite for Race 7, a mile-and-70-yard 6,250 claiming race for fillies and mares. The 3-year-old daughter of Algorithms, who finished second as the beaten favorite in her last two starts at a one-turn mile, will stretch out around two turns Saturday. Inedatequila, who romped to a front-running maiden victory in her first start for trainer Kent Sweezey last time out at a one-turn mile, also stretches out Saturday.

Race 8, a co-featured optional claiming allowance for fillies and mares at a mile on turf, could well prove to be a 'spread' race with several horses appearing to have win potential, including Laura Cazares-trained Zodiac Princess, who returns to turf after her three-race winning streak was snapped in an off-the-turf race last time out. Meadow Beauty, who drops down from a troubled stakes outing, and Pardon My Heart, who returns from a five-month layoff since breaking her maiden during the Championship Meet, are scheduled to represent Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse.

Race 9, win or lose, will be all about Bodexpress.

The Rainbow 6 sequence is scheduled conclude in Race 10 with a 7 ½-furlong maiden special weight race on turf that attracted a full field of 2-year-old fillies, including first-time starters trained by Casse, Sweezey, Michael Maker, Saffie Joseph Jr. and Carlos David, as well as a second-time starter trained by Kenny McPeek. Did we hear someone say, 'Spread?'
