Without Parole Retired To Newsells Park Stud In England For 2021

Without Parole, winner of the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes, has been retired and will return to the U.K. to commence stud duties at Newsells Park Stud for the 2021 season, it has been announced.

Bred by John and Tanya Gunther, the son of Frankel was unbeaten in his first four starts culminating in his impressive victory at Royal Ascot, where he justified favoritism to beat the likes of Gustav Klimt and Irish 2000 Guineas winner, Romanised. His winning time that day was the second fastest ever recorded at Ascot, faster than Kingman and Without Parole's own sire Frankel. A subsequent switch to Chad Brown in the U.S., saw Without Parole consistently perform at the very highest level over a mile with placings in the Breeders' Cup Mile, Shadwell Turf Mile and Shoemaker Mile.

Commenting on his retirement to Newsells Park Stud, general manager Julian Dollar said, “We're delighted to be standing Without Parole at Newsells Park. It's no secret that we, like virtually every other global stallion operation, chased this horse hard after his impressive win at Royal Ascot and its fitting he should now retire to the Stud where he was born and raised. Without Parole is a beautiful horse with an athletic physique and superb conformation. As his race record states, he's an out and out miler who possesses a great turn of foot. Importantly, he has a potent, proven sire's pedigree which should offer breeders plenty of options. He'll certainly be heavily supported by Newsells Park and of course his Eclipse-award winning breeders, John and Tanya Gunther.”

Commenting on his retirement to stud, John Gunther said: “Without Parole has given me the most memorable and exciting day of my life with his victory in the St. James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. It was my biggest dream come true and I continue to be overwhelmed by the heart and perseverance he has shown with his racing pursuits in America. He has raced in 12 consecutive Grade 1s and faced myriad traffic obstructions, at times unsuitable turf conditions and he just never gives up, as demonstrated again by his third place finish in the prestigious Shadwell Turf Mile. I love this horse and can't wait to breed to him.”

Commenting on Without Parole, John Gosden said: “He was a very sound and tough colt and an incredibly good natured horse to train. He won the St James's Palace in courageous style off a strong pace and he showed great speed in the Breeders' Cup Mile.”

Commenting on Without Parole, Chad Brown said: “When Without Parole came to me last year, he immediately showed himself to be a class horse with tremendous ability. I thought so highly of him that I paired him up with Bricks and Mortar, who of course went on to win the Breeders' Cup Turf and be awarded Horse of The Year honors. Without Parole ran huge in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Mile to be third off of a six month lay-off and it has been hugely frustrating that he hasn't added another Group 1 to his resume. He has run some incredibly good races again this year, just not had the necessary racing luck.”

BHA, Sky Sports Partner for ‘Step on Track’ Programme

Sky Sports Racing has partnered with the British Horseracing Authority ‘Step on Track’ Programme, which will take pace via ZOOM Oct. 26-30. Conceived by the BHA’s Careers in Racing team, the focus for the week will be to develop interest in the sport from groups currently under represented in horseracing. Aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds, the first ‘Step on Track’ comprises a week-long programme of talks involving high-profile names from across all areas of the horseracing industry.

Chief Executive of At The Races and Sky Sports Racing, Matthew Imi, said: “The programme of events that the Careers in Racing team have been able to put on during next week’s ‘Step on Track’ will provide participants with a broad range of career options they might want to consider and we are very grateful to all of our colleagues within the sport who are supporting us with their time and expertise. Along with organising work experience and mentoring, this is the sort of initiative which will help expose horseracing to those from ethnic minority backgrounds and allow them to explore career opportunities in racing, the UK’s second largest spectator sport.”

Added Zoe Elliott, Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment at the BHA, “When anyone is thinking what they might want to do work wise, they really need to be able to ‘see it’ in order to understand that they can ‘be it’ so making career options and job roles visible–and having BAME ambassadors-is really important to careers in racing. We are very much looking forward to developing the Step on Track Programme over the next few years.”

Breeders’ Cup Partners With Guardian Security

The Breeders’ Cup announced a new partnership with Guardian Security to provide 24-hour security services surrounding the 2020 World Championships, scheduled for Nov. 6 and 7 at Keeneland. Over 100 security guards will be deployed to support the Breeders’ Cup Equine Security Team to help monitor activity in the barns, keep daily logbooks of who enters a stall and bolster overall stable and racetrack security while enforcing safety and integrity protocols.

“Protecting the welfare of our horses has always been an utmost priority,” said Dora Delgado, Breeders’ Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer. “We firmly believe in the continued enhancement and enforcement of the security standards in Thoroughbred racing, and we hope to set the new benchmark in equine care through our partnership with Guardian Security.”

Equibase Analysis: Jo Jo Air Leads Senator Ken Maddy Stakes Field

The Grade 3, $100,000 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes this Saturday at Santa Anita Park brings together a field of seven fillies and mare turf sprinters, four of which have won their most recent race or the race just prior to it.

Among the group, Magic at Midnight will very likely be in front from the start given that she has lead decisively after a quarter mile has been run in all four career starts to date, winning all four although none were stakes. Among the horses proven at stakes level, Jo Jo Air leads the group as she won the similar Daisycutter Stakes in July at Del Mar. Aqua Seaform Shame and Biddy Duke have also run well at the level as they finished second and third, respectively, in the Unzip Me Stakes, restricted to just three year olds, last month over the course. An Eddie Surprise won the Wishing Well Stakes at the distance on the Santa Anita turf in her most recent race, eight months ago in February. Lakerball has been running in longer races throughout most of her career, but is winless since taking the Pike Place Dancer Stakes at Golden Gate in the fall of 2018. Zee Drop cuts back in distance after a fourth place finish in the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes last month.

Jo Jo Air is definitely the most accomplished filly in the field in turf sprints, winning four from 12 races. Two of those were stakes victories and the most recent of that pair was the best race of her career. That came in the Daisycutter Stakes at Del Mar in July where she rallied from third and earned a 111 Equibase Speed Figure which was not only a career-best but the best in the field. Jo Jo Air then went to Pimlico to contest The Very One Stakes and apparently did not care for the soft turf, finishing sixth as the heavy favorite. Shipping back out from trainer Wesley Ward's home base in Kentucky into California for this race the same way she did for the Daisycutter and running on much firmer ground than compared to the Very One Stakes, Jo Jo Air could likely return to the form shown this summer and win the Ken Maddy Stakes.

Magic at Midnight will have to be caught as its obvious where she will be in the early stages. Having led by a length and one-half or more by the time a quarter mile has been run in all four of her races to date, and never looking back from there, Magic at Midnight could prove very brave on the front end once again. The only time she ran on turf, in August at Del Mar, Magic at Midnight earned a 103 figure, but that effort came off an 11 month layoff and so better still is possible.

An Eddie Surprise leads the field in career earnings at $341,952 and has won five of 20 races on turf in her career. Most of those were allowance level races, and she has nine runner-up finishes to go along with the five wins. Still, when last seen she won the Wishing Well Stakes at the distance of the Ken Maddy Stakes on the turf course at Santa Anita. That effort earned a 106 figure which is the second best in the field and if she can fire off the bench she could have a strong say in the outcome.

The rest of the field, with their best Equibase Speed Figures, is Aqua Seaform Shame (104), Biddy Duke (103), Lakerball (102) and Zee Drop (103).
