Stonestreet Stables' Campanelle, whose entry into the Mint Ladies Sprint (G3) triggered a purse increase to $1 million, landed the first-place prize with a hard-fought nose victory in the race Saturday at Kentucky Downs.
The 4-year-old Kodiac filly, with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, battled front-runner Bay Storm through the final furlong and prevailed by the slimmest margin. She Can't Sing was third, two lengths behind Bay Storm.
Final time for the 6 ½-furlong turf test for fillies and mares was 1:14.57.
Campanelle was third in the Platinum Jubilee (G1) at Royal Ascot June 18 in her previous start but was back to her brilliant best Saturday, adding the Ladies Sprint to her record, which also includes wins in the 2020 Darley Prix Morny (G1) at Deauville, and the 2021 Commonwealth Cup (G1) at Royal Ascot. She won the Giant's Causeway Stakes April 16 at Keeneland to begin the year for trainer Wesley Ward.
Bred in Ireland by Tally-Ho Stud, Campanelle is out of the Namid mare Janina. She returned $3.56.
