Highland Reel, the winner of the 2016 Breeders' Cup Turf, will relocate to S T Farm in Japan for the 2023 Northern Hemisphere breeding season, Yahoo! Japan reports.
The 10-year-old son of Galileo has spent his stallion career to date shuttling between Coolmore Stud in Ireland and Swettenham Stud in Australia, and he will ship to Japan from Australia at the conclusion of the Southern Hemisphere breeding season.
“During his racing days, Highland Reel was a horse whose performances were outstanding, not only in Europe, but overseas,” a representative of S T Farm told Yahoo! Japan. “I feel that his progeny show good speed, and although they have achieved results in Europe and the United States, I feel that the Japan may be a better fit.”
One of the sport's great globetrotters in recent memory, Highland Reel won 10 of 27 starts for the Coolmore partnership and trainer Aidan O'Brien, earning $10,530,964.
He won graded or group stakes races in the U.S., England, and Hong Kong, with additional starts in Ireland, France, Australia, and the U.A.E.
He won the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase twice, and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes during the prestigious Royal Ascot meet, adding to English Group 1 victories in the Coronation Cup and Prince of Wales's Stakes. Highland Reel also finished in the money in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in France, the G1 Juddmonte International Stakes in England, and the Cox Plate in Australia.
In the U.S., Highland Reel won the G1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park in 2015, then he returned stateside a year later to win the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita Park. He finished third in the same race the following year at Del Mar.
At stud, Highland Reel's top runners include Italian champion Atamisque and Comanche Country, who recently won the G3 Surfer Girl Stakes at Del Mar.
