One of the richest races of the season highlights the card for Monday, July 18, at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack (FLGR). The $150,000 New York Derby will be contested at a distance of 1 1/16 miles.
Barese is the morning line favorite for the 49th renewal of the annual route. The 6-5 program choice for the New York-bred event restricted to 3-year-olds is the only multiple stakes winner in the field. He registered both notable victories during the winter at Aqueduct
The Michael Maker-trainee had a respectable run in the $500,000 Ohio Derby in his last start. He finished the graded stakes at Thistledown in the fourth position.
Barese will be vying for his fourth career triumph on Monday. The $230,250 earner will be under the direction of jockey Ricardo Santana,
The most recent FLGR 3-year-old stake winner was also from the barn of Maker. Rotknee scored a convincing 12 and three-quarter length triumph in the $50,000 Ontario County stakes on June 29.
Jockey John Velazquez is expected to make his fourth start at FLGR. The Hall of Fame rider will be aboard Best Idea for trainer Todd Pletcher. He directed the talented colt to a second place finish in the Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont on May 30.
Velazquez rode in the New York Derby in his most recent appearance at FLGR on July 3, 2015. He was in the irons of Ostralenka who finished fifth. However, he recorded a victory aboard Temper Mint Patty in the $75,000 New York Oaks that day,
The $150,000 (added) New York Derby is one of the richest races scheduled to be run at FLGR. Notable past winners of the annual stake include Fio Rito and Tin Cup Chalice. The event has been held for years as the second jewel of the Big Apple Triple beginning with the Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont Park and concluding with the Albany Stakes at Saratoga.
The first Handicapping Challenge of 2022 will take place on Monday. The top three finishers win cash with a top prize of $1,000. The contest is free for Lucky North members.
