Bango scored his record-equaling 11th Churchill Downs win Saturday when besting Gulfstream Way by a head to capture the $300,000 Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes.
Toting Tyler Gaffalione, Tamaroak Partners' homebred Congrats gelding tied the documented wins by Ready's Rocket from 2005-2012. Sent off the favorite in the field of six, Bango returned $4.32 after covering six furlongs in 1:09.02 on a fast track.
A 6-year-old Kentucky-bred trained by Greg Foley, Bango improved his career stats to 14-4-2 from 33 starts and increased his lifetime earnings to $1,459,261 with the race's $183,450 winner's share. His Churchill record includes stakes wins in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the Aristides, and 2021 and 2023 renewals of the Kelly's Landing Stakes, 2022 Bet on Sunshine, and 2023 St. Matthews Overnight Stakes. He was third in the 2021 edition of the Louisville Thoroughbred Society but prevailed with determination this year for the record-equaling triumph.
The dark bay or brown runner was produced by the Smart Strike mare Josaka.
