Bernhards Pick Up Uncle Mo Colt for $1 Million

In a reprise of Monday's session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where Uncle Mo and Into Mischief had traded blows at the very top of the market and were together accountable for 10 of the top 11-priced yearlings, they served up an encore Wedesnday. Just minutes after Spendthrift's Into Mischief got his first seven-figure yearling Wednesday, Coolmore's Uncle Mo followed suit with a $1-million colt of his own. Hip 528, a Jan. 13 son of Flighty Almighty (GB) (Elusive Quality), was purchased by Pin Oak Stud's Jim and Dana Bernhard. The pair have made headlines recently with their acquisition of an Adena Springs property and with their GI Haskell S. winner Geaux Rocket Ride (Candy Ride {Arg}). Their new Uncle Mo purchase was consigned by Hunter Valley Farm and bred by Chasemore Farm in Kentucky. His dam is a half-sibling to two black-type winners, including English GSW Boomer (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

Harness Trainer Suspended 27 Days, Fined $3,500 Over Pair Of 2022 Positives For Opioids

Two of Miriam Kraemer's trainees returned positive tests for opioids after races at Freehold Raceway, according to a New Jersey Racing Commission ruling posted to the Association of Racing Commissioners International website this week. The trainer was issued a total of a 27-day suspension and a $3,500 fine; both horses were disqualified with purse money ordered returned.

Sir Richie N finished second in the nineth race on Feb. 25, 2022; his post-race samples identified the presence of the prohibited substances Oxymorphone, Oxycodone, and Noroxycodone at a level of 5ng/mL, 0.5ng/mL and 0.5ng/mL respectively.

Slipin Skip finished second in the tenth race on April 30, 2022; post-race samples identified the presence of the prohibited substance Oxymorphone at a level of 1.38ng/mL.

Harness racing is not under the purview of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (nor were HISA's ADMC rules in effect in early 2022); if it were, the above-named opioids' status as banned substances would put Kraemer under consideration for a two-year suspension per positive test.

Kraemer's suspension shall begin on Aug. 30, 2023 and continue through and including Sept. 25, 2023. Payment of the total fine of $3,500 shall be received by the NJRC on or before Sept. 25, 2023.

Kramer, a native of Sweden, won her first race as a trainer on Sept. 21, 2019, according to a story from UStrottingnews.com.

West Point Pays $1.1M for Into Mischief Colt

A June 1-foaled colt by Into Mischief was the first yearling to cross the seven-figure barrier Wednesday at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale when he fetched $1.1 million from West Point. Bred and consigned by Clearsky Farms, the son of GSW Ever So Clever (Medaglia d'Oro) sold as Hip 521. The mare has had two previous sons by Into Mischief go through the September ring, with her 2020 colt bringing $600,000 from China Horse Club/Gandharvi Racing and her 2021 colt a $400,000 RNA last year. The 2020 colt, now a Qatar Racing colorbearer, is named Everso Mischievous and won a Saratoga allowance Aug. 5 for Brad Cox.

Doncaster: Darnation Takes Aim At The May Hill

Fresh from celebrating a Group 1 success with one of his 2-year-old fillies on Sunday, Karl Burke is looking to continue that run in Doncaster's G2 May Hill S. on Thursday with the standard-setting Darnation (Ire) by the Moyglare heroine Fallen Angel's sire Too Darn Hot (GB). Following up a 10-length novice win at Thirsk in July with success in the G3 Prestige S. at Goodwood last month, Newtown Anner Stud Farm's homebred is up to a mile but her trainer has no concerns on that score.

“The trip, the track, the ground and everything will suit,” he said. “She's not a flashy work horse at home, but she seems very well and any rain I would imagine will be to her advantage–it certainly won't be a disadvantage to her. She was very tough down at Goodwood and she put up a very good performance to break her maiden at Thirsk. That form was franked to a degree, with the second horse that she beat 10 lengths coming out and winning next time. I can't hand on heart say she's in the league of Fallen Angel, but she's obviously a talented filly and she goes there as the top-rated horse in the race, so it's very exciting.”

Too Darn Hot is also represented by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's Southwell and Beverley winner Zenjabeela (GB), while other unexposed types yet to try black-type company are St Albans Bloodstock's 7 1/2-length Salisbury maiden scorer Romanova (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) from the Ollie Sangster stable and the Newmarket novice winners Meribella (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and See The Fire (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) from the Ralph Beckett and Andrew Balding stables respectively.

The card also sees the G2 Park Hill Fillies' S., or “Fillies' St Leger”, with Ben and Sir Martyn Arbib's runaway G2 Lillie Langtry S. winner Sumo Sam (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) looking to defy a penalty and prove she is no one-trick pony on this less-demanding surface.
