Omaha Beach’s Code Omaha Off The Mark at First Asking

7th-Horseshoe Indianapolis, $34,000, Msw, 9-25, 2yo, 5fT, :58.40, fm, 2 1/4 lengths.
CODE OMAHA (c, 2, Omaha Beach–Lantiz {SP, $271,821}, by Tizway) was favored by $15 over fellow firster Silent Heart (Heart to Heart) in a five-furlong turf dash Monday at Horseshoe Indianapolis and the duo comprised what turned out to be a fairly rich return to exacta players. A $180,000 Fasig-Tipton July yearling turned $550,000 OBS April breezer, the bay broke sharply, but inward, causing a bit of a chain reaction to his inside. Easing to the lead for Manny Esquivel, the bay carved out an opening quarter in :22.63 with a host of pursuers and maintained a clear advantage into the stretch. Briefly challenged by Azteca's Gold (Sharp Azteca) approaching the eighth pole, Code Omaha kicked on nicely and covered his final furlong in a smart :11.39 to score comfortably at odds of 27-10. Silent Heart was forced to cover extra ground while rallying into the final quarter mile and boxed on gamely for second to complete a $31 exacta.

The 12th winner for his first-crop sire (by War Front), Code Omaha is the first foal from a turf stakes-placed dam. There is further grass influence down the pace, as third dam Candleinthedark (Cox's Ridge) was placed in the GIII Modesty H. on the grass and was a half-sister to GII Hall of Fame S. winner Islefaxyou (Storm Bird). The yearling half-brother to Code Omaha, a colt by Complexity, cost Thomas & Mitchell Bloodstock $50,000 at Keeneland September last week, and Lantiz is also the dam of a yearling colt by Maclean's Music. She was most recently covered by Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music). Sales history: $185,000 Ylg '22 FTKJUL; $550,000 2yo '23 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $20,400. Soloshot Alone on the Wire in Lady Finger, First Stakes Winner for Sire

Soloshot (Solomini) was the short favorite at even-money for this stakes debut, but produced an effort similar to her career debut, going coast-to-coast in the Lady Finger S. to become Solomini (by Curlin)'s first stakes winner.

A dominant 7 3/4-length victress at first calling Aug. 27 in an off-turf baby dash at Saratoga against a state-bred maiden field, Soloshot broke like one here and quickly establish control over the pace from two off the rail. Putting a comfortable margin on Redwineandwhiskey (War Dancer) entering the straight, she responded when roused and was ridden to a two-length margin. Unicorn Cake (Cloud Computing) would come on late to secure the last minor placing by a head.

Soloshot is the second winner from three to the races, following elder sister Banterra (Practical Joke). She has a yearling full-sister and the dam returned to the sire for 2024 after missing on last season's visit. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

Jeff Metz Shutters Stable In Favor Of Stall Superintendent Position At Santa Anita

Trainer Jeff Metz has closed his stable in order to take a position as the stall superintendent at Santa Anita Park, the Daily Racing Form reported.

A winner of 938 races over a career that began in 1991, Metz is a former leading trainer at Emerald Downs and has been among the leading trainers at the recently-announced-to-be-closing Turf Paradise.

Metz' daughter, Zoe Metz, will take over his eight-horse string at Santa Anita, while his trainees in Washington State were sold or turned out.

“It was my plan to stay close to California and this came open suddenly. It happened fast,” Metz told DRF. “It looks like a good opportunity, knowing all the players between management and horsemen on the backstretch.”

According to his website, Metz is a former champion hunter jumper rider and former amateur jockey. Following his worldwide career in the saddle, Metz worked as an assistant trainer to trainers such as Bruce Headley, Dan Hendricks, and Bob Hess, Jr., while simultaneously earning a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology.
