Colonial Downs made a major change in its annual calendar and stakes schedule this year by moving the Virginia Derby. Previously a graded stakes race held in September for 3-year-olds on turf, the 1 1/8-mile race was switched to dirt and rescheduled to March as the anchor of a brief boutique meet.

Each week a panel of media members, horseplayers, and Breeders’ Cup World Championships officials release a poll tabulating their votes on the nation's top contenders for the 2025 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic. The rankings are a weekly rating of the top 10 horses in contention and are determined by each voter ranking their top 10 horses with points assigned on a descending 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.

Networking and making the right contacts gave Ben Gowans, who had no familial ties in the business, a jumpstart and now a firm foothold in the world of Thoroughbred racing and breeding. Gowans, 28, works for one of the world’s most prolific and respected breeding and racing entities, Gainesway, located near Lexington. While he oversees bloodstock and racing at Gainesway, Gowans also has his own outside clients.
