Nations Pride Overhauls Pacesetter Royal Champion Late To Win Canadian International

Godolphin homebred Nations Pride (IRE) stalked pacesetter Royal Champion (IRE) from second before wearing down that rival at the sixteenths pole, then shaking free for a clear in in the $750,000 Canadian International (G1) Sunday at Woodbine.

Sent off the favorite under William Buick, Nations Pride was winning his third race at the highest level as he cruised across the finish line 2 1/4 lengths to the good of gallant runner-up Royal Champion.

Adhamo (IRE) finished third.

A 4-year-old son of Teofilo, globetrotting Nations Pride has five stakes wins in five nations: Canada, Dubai, the U.S., England, and France. He scored previous top-level wins the 2022 Saratoga Derby and in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis (G1) July 30 in his previous start.

Trained by Charlie Appleby, Nations Pride returned $2.80 after covering the 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.65.

Royal Champion took charge soon after the start and opened a comfortable lead as Nations Pride tracked through an opening quarter in :25.42, a half in :50.07, and six furlongs in 1:14.80.

Royal Champion appeared poised to for a front-running win under James Doyle as he entered the stretch with a one-length lead ,but Nations Pride wore him down with a sustained rally to score.

Nations Pride, who has a 10-2-1 record from 15 career starts, was produced by the Oasis Dream (GB) mare Important Time (IRE).

Pharoah Filly Cruises in Rained-Off Matron

Jody's Pride, a 10 1/2-length debut winner in an off-turf event upstate Aug. 9, enjoyed the same surface switch here and the result was similar. Off towards the back of the pack, the dark bay quickly picked off rivals down the backside and uncorked a three-deep move around the bend to take command under her own power before a half posted in :45.93. She found no challengers from there on in, and cruised under the line a dominant victoress from last-out New York-bred stakes fourth finisher Tricky Temper. A Primera Vista, second in the Minnesota-bred Northern Lights Debutante S. at Canterbury last out, was third.

“I broke a step slow and I asked her to get herself into the race from there,” said winning pilot Flavien Prat. “Once I hit the turn, she just swapped leads and naturally on her own took me there. I didn't want to take anything away that came easy.”

Trainer Jorge Abreu said, “The main thing I like about her is that she relaxed a little bit today. That was my worry. When she ran the first time [going] 5 1/2 [furlongs], you know how they can be mentally, especially the fillies–they want to be a little keyed up and stuff like that. The first day we galloped her after the race, she looked like she was going to go the other way, but then she's got a pretty good, level head, that filly.”

As far as what could be next, the conditioner said, “My goal is to make it to the Breeders' Cup with her. I think she's that kind of horse. [Which race] is something we have to sit down and see. We'll see how she comes out in the morning and take it from there. I would rather go a mile. A mile on the turf. My first preference is turf.”

Pedigree Notes:

Jody's Pride is her sire's 35th Northern Hemisphere black-type winner, and would be his 19th grade/group winner should the original grade of this race be reinstated after review. She is the 27th Northern Hemisphere stakes winner out of a Scat Daddy mare. Mackinnon, the multiple stakes-winning juvenile who was third in the 2021 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, is bred on this same American Pharoah–Scat Daddy cross.

Steve Weston's Parkland Thoroughbreds and trainer Jorge Abreu also campaigned the winner's dam, who was a $250,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling and won both of her starts in turf sprints against fellow New York-breds. Jody's Song's prior foal Empathy (Uncle Mo) broke her maiden going seven furlongs on the Belmont grass in July. A half-brother to MGSW/GISP Make Mischief (Into Mischief), Jody's Song has yearling and foal full-brothers to Jody's Pride. She most recently visited Epicenter.

‘She’s Really A Freak’: Idiomatic Runs Away With Spinster En Route To Breeders’ Cup Distaff

The late Prince Khalid Abdullah of Juddmonte Farms was an astute breeder who developed some of the most accomplished female families in the Stud Book in the latter part of the 20th Century and early 21st Century. The fruits of his work were on full display on Sunday at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., when Juddmonte homebred Idiomatic scored her fourth consecutive graded stakes victory and second Grade 1 in the $600,000 Juddmonte Spinster, a race the winning owner sponsors.

Ridden by Florent Geroux for trainer Brad Cox, the 4-year-old daughter of Curlin jumped out to an early lead and was never challenged en route to an easy 4 1/4-length victory in the Keeneland fall meet's top race for fillies and mares. Le Da Vida finished second, with Bellamore 2 1/2 lengths back in third and Nest – the 2022 champion 3-year-old filly – fourth in the field of six, beaten 11 1/4 lengths. Sixtythreecaliber and Malloy completed the order of finish.

Sent away at even money, with Nest the 4-5 favorite, Idiomatic paid $4.12 to win after racing nine furlongs on a fast track in 1:49.82. She set all the fractions: 24.49, :48.31, 1:12.24, and 1:36.82.

The Spinster is a “Win and You're In” Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race giving automatic fees-paid entry to the Distaff, to be run Nov. 4 at Santa Anita. It's a race that has eluded Juddmonte, one of the biggest supporters of the Breeders' Cup since its inception in 1984. This was Juddmonte's second Spinster win, the previous one coming in 2013 with Emollient when Keeneland had an all-weather track.

Geroux was asked how easy it was winning aboard Idiomatic.

“Actually, it was not easy looking at the race on paper with Nest being in there, a very good filly,” Geroux said. “But my filly just keeps on improving and we know the distance is not a problem. She just keeps improving, and (trainer) Brad (Cox) and his team had her at her prime again today. She's just getting better and better, and I can't wait to ride her again.”

Idiomatic runs away with the Juddmonte Spinster

Idiomatic is the fourth generation of mares owned and bred by Juddmonte. She is a daughter of Lockdown (by Juddmonte's First Defence), a stakes winner who was G1 placed but could do no better than fourth in the 2017 Spinster. Lockdown's dam, Rising Tornado, was a daughter of Storm Cat who raced without great success in Europe for Andre Fabre. Her dam, Silver Star (by Juddmonte's Zafonic), also raced for Fabre in Europe.  Silver Star was produced from the Sir Ivor mare, Monroe, bred by Darrel and Lindy Brown. The Browns raced Monroe dam, Best in Show, who produced Kentucky Oaks winner Blush With Pride. Best in Show would be named a Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Broodmare of the Year.

This the first Juddmonte Spinster victory for Cox.

“It's very special, and I want to thank (owner Fahad bin) Mr. Khalid and his family and obviously the Juddmonte team here in America,” said Cox. “This is a big win for this filly, it's her second Grade 1. She's had a fantastic year. (This race is) a 'Win and You're In' (for) the Breeders' Cup so we're excited about that. I've run four or five fillies in the past in (the Juddmonte Spinster) and haven't had much luck, so she was able to break through for us today.

“She's a tremendous talent, very physical, really. When I was saddling her in the Paddock, I was, like, 'Wow, she's the biggest horse I've ever trained.' She's a monster. She has a tremendous stride and covers so much ground. She's really a freak – I mean, she really is a tremendous talent, and we're very fortunate to have her.”

Idiomatic now has eight wins with one second and two thirds from 11 starts. She's won seven of eight this year. Her win streak began in the G3 Shawnee in June, continued with the G2 Delaware Handicap in July, and the G1 Personal Ensign over Secret Oath and Nest in August.

Cox is looking ahead to the Distaff, a race he won twice with Monomoy Girl in 2018 and 2020.

“It comes down to, you know, California is speed, she's got speed, and we'll see who else signs on,” Cox said. “It'll be a showdown, I'm sure.”

Good Samaritan Colt Pulls off Bourbon Shocker

Longshot Can Group rallied from last to first at 27-1 in Sunday's GII Castle & Key Bourbon S. at Keeneland to narrowly stamp his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Last-out Sapling S. scorer Noted came out on the wrong end of a tight photo, while Pepsi Juvenile Sprint S. winner Vote No rounded out the lucrative trifecta.

Sandwiched at the start and back to last as the full field scrambled for position into the first bend, Can Group was still patiently handled by Francisco Arrieta as they straightened. He was able to sneak through a seam in midstretch, kicked it into high gear from there and zoomed down the center of the course to nip Noted at the line.

Official fractions and a final time were never posted. TimeformUS's Craig Milkowski later tweeted an estimated final time of 1:43.73.

“He was [last going into the final turn],” noted Arrieta, who was celebrating his first Keeneland stakes win. “When I moved and he saw the leaders, he just took off and, wow, it was amazing. I felt like I crossed the wire in front. He was rolling. I won with him at Kentucky Downs and he came from off the pace very nice, slow, so today I planned the same. Relax, give him time and make one move, and he showed up.”

The winner was third in a pair of dirt sprints at Ellis to kick off his career before breaking through in visually impressive fashion going seven panels on the Kentucky Downs sod Sept. 2.

Pedigree Notes:

Can Group builds on a strong month-plus in Kentucky for his young sire (by Harlan's Holiday), who was also represented by the $1-million GIII Big Ass Fans Music City S. winner–his first at the graded level–and $1-million Dueling Grounds Oaks runner-up on the same weekend Can Group earned his diploma. He is one of 32 stakes winners and 13 group/graded winners worldwide out of Street Sense mares.

The winner's unraced dam has now been responsible for a trio of juvenile stakes winners, including 2019 Prairie Gold Lassie and Iowa Sorority S. winner Flat Out Speed, who stretched out effectively to take the GIII Iowa Oaks at three. Starlight Racing purchased Blue Gallina's yearling filly by Authentic for $310,000 at Fasig Saratoga. She failed to produce a foal for 2023, but was bred back to Jack Christopher for 2024.
