R.A.C.E. Fund To Auction Hoff Racing Memorabilia Collection, Starting Wednesday

The R.A.C.E. Fund, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 2004 and TAA accredited, will begin auctioning the first phase of the private racing memorabilia of Christopher Hoff on eBay from October 25-28.

“As a thoroughbred racing photographer, I had the opportunity to witness the performance of such equine athletes as Alysheba, Sunday Silence, Personal Ensign, Private Terms and many others,” said Hoff. “However, I also saw the fate of the 'discarded' horses who were deemed unprofitable for their owners. These beautiful horses are too often forgotten and I am thrilled that my collection of racing memorabilia can help provide a well-deserved pleasant retirement or help with the rescue of these wonderful animals.”

“We cannot thank Mr. Hoff enough for donating such a vast collection of racing memorabilia to our organization to help the horses,” stated Marlene Murray, president of R.A.C.E. Fund. “Due to the volume we will be auctioning the items in phases. The first phase will be a three-day auction on eBay from Oct. 25 at 8:00 p.m. ET and ending on Oct. at 8:00 p.m.”

Featured items include: Breeders Cup official programs from 1984 to 1992 in mint condition. Breeders' Cup Daily Racing Forms and other publications are also available, as are signed photographs by trainers Carl Nafzger, Jack Van Berg, Sonny Hine, D. Wayne Lukas and jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. Also, Share The Glory and Fly So Free saddle cloths, and a 1987 framed Washington, D.C., International program signed by jockeys, plus many more items.

Subsequent phases and auction dates are yet to be determined but visit www.racefund.org for future updates. Some of the other memorabilia to be offered in the future: an Easy Goer saddle cloth wore in the Gotham Stakes; Lil E Tee horseshoe that he wore in winning the Kentucky Derby; Private Terms' horseshoes and program from the Kentucky Derby;  Time Magazine featuring secretary on the cover; 1973 Kentucky Derby program (Secretariat); Affirmed and Alydar 1978 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes programs and many more programs from the Triple Crown races, Travers, Whitney and multiple books, etc.

All proceeds raised will be used to help thoroughbred racehorses in need of retirement and rescue from slaughter.

More information about the R.A.C.E. Fund can be obtained at www.racefund.org. Any questions about the auction or items can be sent to info@racefund.org or go to the R.A.C.E. Road To The Kentucky Oaks: V V’s Dream Tops Field Of Seven For Sunday’s Rags To Riches

MJM Racing and Magdalena Racing's Grade 3-winning V V's Dream headlines a field of seven 2-year-old fillies that entered Sunday's 11th running of the $200,000 Rags to Riches Stakes (Listed) at Churchill Downs.

Run at 1 1/16 miles, the Rags to Riches will award the top five finishers points on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale for the Road to the Kentucky Oaks.

Sunday's spectacular 11-race program will get underway at 1 p.m. (all times Eastern) and feature all 2-year-old races. Dubbed as “Stars of Tomorrow I,” the Rags to Riches field will go to post at 4:33 p.m. in Race 8. Two races later is the $200,000 Street Sense (G3), the open-company counterpart, to the Rags to Riches.

V V's Dream was possible to contest the Nov. 3 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (Grade 1) but trainer Kenny McPeek opted to keep the daughter of Mitole at her Churchill Downs base for the Rags to Riches. V V's Dream has yet to finish worse than second in her young career. Three weeks ago, the gray filly finished second to Candied in the Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. Prior to the Alcibiades, V V's Dream dominated the Pocahontas (G3) at Churchill Downs by 8 ¾ lengths. Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. will once again pilot V V's Dream and the duo will break from post No. 3.

The Rags to Riches field also includes two fillies trained by multiple Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Brad Cox: Calumet Farm's Gin Gin and Gary and Mary West's West Sunset. Cox used the Rags to Riches in 2017 as a prep for Monomoy Girl who went on to win the 2018 Longines Kentucky Oaks.

Here is the complete Rags to the Riches field in order of post position (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Candy Landy (Tyler Gaffalione, Rusty Arnold II);
  2. Floored (Luis Saez, Vicki Oliver);
  3. V V's Dream (Hernandez, McPeek);
  4. West Sunset (Flavien Prat, Cox);
  5. Shimmering Allure (Julien Leparoux, McPeek);
  6. Twirling Good Time (Rafael Bejarano, Phil Bauer); and
  7. Gin Gin (Florent Geroux, Cox).

Stars Of Tomorrow: Grade 1-Placed Generous Tipper Leads Seven Rivals For Sunday’s Street Sense

Walking L Thoroughbreds' Generous Tipper, the recent third-place finisher in the Breeders' Futurity (Grade 1), tops a field of eight 2-year-olds that entered Sunday's 11th running of the $200,000 Street Sense Stakes (G3) on “Stars of Tomorrow I” at Churchill Downs.

The 1 1/16-mile Street Sense Stakes is the featured event on opening day of the 21-day Fall Meet. The 11-race program will feature all 2-year-old racing. First post is 1 p.m. (all times Eastern) and the Street Sense will go as Race 10 of 11 at 5:35 p.m. Two races prior to the Street Sense is the $200,000 Rags to Riches Stakes (Listed) for 2-year-old fillies.

The Street Sense is part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby Prep Season where the top five finishers will be awarded points on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale towards qualifying for the 150th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve. The Rags to Riches will award points to the top five finishers on the same scale for the Road to the Kentucky Oaks.

Generous Tipper, trained by Kenny McPeek, was a 7 ½-length maiden special weight winner on closing day of the Ellis Park meet in late August. The son of this race's namesake, Street Sense, finished third to Locked and The Wine Steward three weeks ago in the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland. Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. will retain the mount from the rail.

The Street Sense field also includes eye-catching debut winner Parchment Party. Owned by Pin Oak Stud and trained by Bill Mott, Parchment Party rallied from 11 lengths off the early pace to win a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight on Sept. 15 at Churchill Downs. The son of Constitution will once again be ridden by James Graham from post No. 5.

Other Street Sense entrants include Iroquois (G3) third-place finisher Liberal Arts; Belmont at Aqueduct eight-length maiden winner Moonlight; and gutsy Churchill Downs maiden special weight winner Informed Patriot.

Here is the complete Street Sense field from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Generous Tipper (Hernandez, McPeek);
  2. Gettysburg Address (Flavien Prat, Brad Cox);
  3. Northern Flame (Julien Leparoux, McPeek);
  4. Moonlight (Luis Saez, Todd Pletcher);
  5. Parchment Party (Graham, Mott);
  6. Informed Patriot (Tyler Gaffalione, Steve Asmussen);
  7. Barksdale (Alex Achard, Will Walden); and
  8. Liberal Arts (Cristian Torres, Robert Medina).

Last year's Street Sense Stakes winner was Two Phil's, who went on to finish second in the Kentucky Derby.

Sunday is the first of two Stars of Tomorrow programs during the Churchill Downs' 134th Fall Meet. Inaugurated in 2005, Churchill Downs' Stars of Tomorrow programs have helped launch the careers of numerous graded stakes winners, including more than 50 Grade I winners led by Horse of the Year champions Gun Runner (2017) and Rachel Alexandra (2009); Kentucky Derby winners Super Saver (2010) and Mandaloun (2021); and Longines Kentucky Oaks winners Rachel Alexandra (2009), Believe You Can (2012), Monomoy Girl (2018) and Secret Oath (2022).

Following Sunday's card, live racing at Churchill Downs will continue on a Wednesday-Sunday schedule through Nov. 26. Daily first post will be 1 p.m. except for Thanksgiving Day program which has a special early post of 11:30 a.m.

Fans can watch and wager on the Churchill Downs Fall Meet on TwinSpires.com, the official wagering provider of Churchill Downs Incorporated and the Kentucky Derby. Expert handicappers Joe Kristufek, Kaitlin Free and Scott Shapiro will offer daily handicapping advice and selections on the simulcast signal which is available on TwinSpires or the Churchill Downs LIVE app on smart TVs.

FanDuel TV is the home for every race during the Fall Meet. An array of analysts will be on-site, including Matt Bernier, Andie Biancone, Caton Bredar, Matt Carothers, Scott Hazleton, Caleb Keller and Geena Lucille.

Kentucky Horse Council: Who Will Care For Your Horse When You Can’t?

Good horse owners do their best to ensure their horses are cared for to the best of their ability, often having a team of farriers, veterinarians, barn owners and trusted friends to guide them through the journey of equine ownership. But what happens when an owner is no longer able to advocate on behalf of their horse?

The Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) will welcome Joshua Beam, partner at Dinsmore & Shohl law firm, for a candid conversation about how horse owners can prepare for their equines, dogs and cats to be taken care of should the need arise.

Wednesday, November 15

5:30 – 6:30 PM: Networking

6:30 – 7:00 PM: Dinner

7:00 – 8:00 PM: Presentation and Q&A Session

“Planning for your pet's care when you're not there is something that can be hard to think about, but it's imperative to ensuring your horse–and other pets–don't end up in a potentially perilous welfare situation,” says Sarah Coleman, executive director of the Kentucky Horse Council. “The Kentucky Horse Council fields calls multiple times a year from relatives who have inherited animals – often with no experience in their upkeep and no idea what to do with them. This unintentional lack of planning adds angst to an already-stressful time.”

Though the situation can be tricky to navigate, having uncomfortable conversations while not under the pressure of a life-altering event gives horse owners the opportunity to consider multiple possibilities completely. This hour-long presentation will guide owners though multiple options of care for horses and other animals should he or she be unable to make decisions on their behalf. Beam will also offer words of advice on how to broach the potentially difficult subject matter with friends and family, how to choose a caretaker and what to consider when unlimited funds for horse care are not an option.

All equine enthusiasts are welcomed and audience questions are encouraged. Questions? Email info@kentuckyhorse.org
