‘As Solid Of A Horse As You Can Get’: Bango Goes For Record-Setting 12th Victory At Churchill Downs

History is on the line in Saturday's $300,000 Bet On Sunshine as Tamaroak Partners' 11-time Churchill Downs winner Bango will attempt to win his record-setting 12th victory beneath the Twin Spires.

Bango, who won his record-tying 11th race at Churchill Downs in the Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes, was made the 6-5 morning line favorite.

“He ran OK at Keeneland in the Phoenix (G2) but we just know how much better he seems to run at Churchill.” Foley said. “He's as solid of a horse as you can get. Winning number 11 and tying Ready's Rocket was a very special day. We've got at least one more to chase this year and hopefully that happens Saturday.”

Bango will face several familiar foes in the Bet On Sunshine including Tejano Twist (5-2), Miles Ahead (6-1), Necker Island (8-1) and Manny Wah (10-1).

With several of the colony's top riders in California for this weekend's Breeders' Cup World Championships, Bango will be reunited with Marcelino Pedroza Jr. The duo teamed up for five starts including a victory in the 2021 Aristides Stakes at Churchill Downs.

The Bet On Sunshine was carded as Race 10 at 7 p.m. (all times Eastern). Each of Churchill Downs live races will be run in between the nine Breeders' Cup races that will all be shown around the venue and on the Big Board.

Battaash’s Full-Brother The Antarctic Retired to Coolmore’s Castlehyde Stud for 2024

Multiple group winner The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Anna Law {Ire}, by Lawman {Fr}), a full-brother to crack sprinter Battaash (Ire), has been retired and will stand under the Coolmore banner at Castlehyde Stud in 2024, Coolmore announced on Wednesday. A fee for the G1 Middle Park S. second and G1 Prix Morny third will be announced later.

“He's fast, a very good-looking individual and his own-brother Battaash is probably the best five-furlong sprinter of recent times,” said Castlehyde's Paddy Fleming. “On a mark of 113 as a 2-year-old, the Antarctic was rated the equal of Havana Grey (GB)–who is out of a Dark Angel mare–and just a pound below his own sire Dark Angel.”

Bred by Paul McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud, the grey was a 750,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 purchase by Coolmore's MV Magnier. Trained by Aidan O'Brien for a Coolmore partnership, the February foal won his first two starts and was second in the G2 Prix Robert Papin later in his juvenile season prior to a victory in the G3 Prix de Cabourg. Two Group 1 placings followed–with a third in the Prix Morny to stablemate Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never) and a second to that foe in the Middle Park. As a 3-year-old he also won the G3 Lacken S. at Naas and was retired with a mark of 12-4-2-3 and $255,971 in earnings.

“We always said Battaash was the best-looking horse that we'd bred but I think this guy is better, no doubt about it,” said McCartan after The Antarctic joined the Coolmore fold at the sales.

The fifth foal out of Anna Law, herself a half-sister to G2 Champagne S. Etlaala (GB) (Selkirk), The Antarctic is also related to group sire Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}).

Horsetrader Available As An Audiobook

The iconic Horsetrader, the 324-page tale of Robert Sangster and the genesis of the Coolmore Throughbred breeding empire, is now available as an audiobook, the Sangster family announced.

Horsetrader covers the pivotal shift in the racing industry between 1974 and 1990 when bloodstock prices skyrocketed from $135,000 to over $13 million. This era reshaped the history of bloodstock breeding, prompting even governmental attention, and adjustments in US tax rates during President Reagan's administration to accommodate the sport's transformation.

Swettenham Stud's Adam Sangster, Robert's son, commissioned English recording artist Christopher Tester to convert Horsetrader into an audiobook this spring, retaining every page and word from the original text.

Written by Patrick and the late Nick Robinson, it will also be available on Audiobook and Amazon later in the year. Owner/breeder Patrick Robinson is currently a globally recognized author with number one bestsellers on both sides of the Atlantic. Nick was one of Robert's oldest friends, and purchased Robert's first racehorse bred by his grandfather Sir John Foster Robinson.

Print copies are extremely rare since it was first published in 1995, with many making over $500 for a second-hand hardback. The affordable modern format is priced at $24.99 and is available here. The Sangster family has pledged that a portion of the profits from the audiobook will go to support essential causes.

Algiers Knocked Out Of Breeders’ Cup With A Foot Issue

G1 Dubai World Cup second Algiers (Ire) (Shamardal) will miss an intended start in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile with a foot issues, according to trainers Simon and Ed Crisford. The 6-year-old sustained bruising on his right front leg.

“Unfortunately Algiers won't be able to run in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile,” the Crisfords' Gainsborough Thoroughbreds tweeted on X (formerly Twitter). “He is going to have to miss a few days training due to a minor foot issue. He will now be prepared for a winter in Dubai.”

The Shamardal gelding enjoyed a fruitful Dubai campaign beginning in January. The G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 went his way that month, as did the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 in February. He was 2 3/4-lengths behind GI Breeders' Cup Classic runner Ushba Tesoro (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) in the Dubai World Cup proper in March and was last seen taking second in the G3 Durham Cup S. at Woodbine on Oct. 7.

Added Ed Crisford at Santa Anita on Wednesday morning, “It's really annoying to have lost Algiers from his race, he had bruising on his right front leg. It doesn't look serious.”
