Nov. 5 Insights: Half to Grade I Winner Big World Debuts in Florida

The lone firster in the field, Team Spoor's CURLIN'S GIRL (Curlin) will open her tab in this maiden baby dash on the back of a string of bullet works. Starting Oct. 7, when she went five furlongs in 1:01.88, she flashed speed Oct. 14 going five panels in :59.44 (1/6); Oct. 23 in company with $475,000 KEESEP grad Shop Lifting (Into Mischief)–who ran second by a head on her debut at Saratoga to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies victress Just F Y I (Justify)–in 1:01.22 (1/8); and most recently Oct. 31 in company with maiden winner Vino Rouge (Vino Rosso) when the pair went four furlongs in :47.69. On the rail and carrying the St Elias Stable colors, JOYFUL LASS (War Front) makes her career debut going long over the synthetic track. The half-sister to GISW Big World (Custom for Carlos) and that one's full-sister SP Gracida, she also has three other winning siblings. Joyful Lass was a $300,000 KEESEPT pick up from breeders KatieRich Farms, and is trained by Todd Pletcher.

To her outside is Bass homebred and stablemate Ravenna (Quality Road). Out of an unraced half-sister to GISW Stormello (Stormy Atlantic) and his full-sibling GSW My Best Brother, her dam Italia can also claim GISP Cherry Lodge (Bernardini), that one's full-sibling GSW Gala Award; GSP Greatest Game (Giant's Causeway) and the dam of Canadian champion 2-year-old filly GSW Curlin's Voyage (Curlin) as a half-relation. This is a busy, international female family with group or graded runners in Japan, England, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and the UAE as well as black-type earners in France and Hong Kong. Al Shaqab’s Orne Makes All For Horris Hill Triumph

Al Shaqab Racing's Orne (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}–Pellucid {GB}, by Excelebration {Ire}) followed up a Sept. 22 debut success at Kempton with a fourth over one mile in last month's G3 Autumn S. and regained the winning thread with a pillar-to-post victory in Saturday's rescheduled G3 Betfred Horris Hill S. at Newmarket.

The 10-1 chance was swiftly into stride and tanked along on the front end through halfway. Nudged along passing the quarter-mile marker, he came under sterner urging approaching the final furlong and, despite drifting left in the closing stages, was driven out to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths from Witness Stand (GB) (Expert Eye {GB}).

“It wasn't the plan to make the running as I wanted to drop in, get a lead and get there late,” revealed rider Rab Havlin. “He was last in [the stalls] and first out, but normally he doesn't do a stroke when he is in front. I went on a fresh bit of ground and he found a rhythm. Towards the finish he got a little bit lonely and ducked left, but he has done it well in the end. He travelled good and handled the ground [behind Ancient Wisdom] in the Autumn S. [last time], but just didn't stay and he could get quicker over the winter. It is nice to get another Group winner on the board before the end of the season as I was running out of time.”

A Mo Reay Out Of Breeders’ Cup Distaff With Foot Bruise

A Mo Reay, who had been 20-1 on the morning line for the Grade 1 Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff, is expected to scratch from the race per the Daily Racing Form's David Grening.

Trainer Brad Cox told Grening Saturday morning that the 4-year-old has a foot bruise. Cox trains A Mo Reay for owner Haruya Yoshida, and she is expected to enter quarantine and ship to Japan to start a breeding career.

A Mo Reay was most recently second in the G2 Beldame at Aqueduct, and earlier this year won the G1 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita, as well as the G3 Bayakoa at Oaklawn. She was bred in Kentucky by T & G Farm of Kentucky and sold for $400,000 to Spendthrift and MyRacehorse as a yearling at the Keeneland September sale in 2020. She also went through the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Fall Mixed Sale, where she brought $400,000 and was purchased by Green Acres Farm.

Shin Emperor Off The Mark at First Asking at Tokyo

Susumu Fujita's Shin Emperor (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), the full-brother to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Sottsass (Fr) and €2.1-million topper at the 2022 Arqana August sale, made a successful racecourse debut Saturday, bursting through with 400 metres to travel en route to a three-length success at Tokyo Racecourse.

Trying an 1800-metre trip for this first go, the son of Starlet's Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was first to break the line and could have led had they chosen, but Takeshi Yokoyama elected to allow the colt to find his feed and settled in a handy fourth behind a steady tempo for the long run down the back straight. Patiently handled on the circle just behind the speed, Shin Emperor traveled strongly and had to be pulled off heels with the real running about to begin, but he split rivals decisively and sprinted his final 600 metres in a strong :33.8 for an easy victory as the $4 (3-1) second favourite.

“He was stronger than I imagined, and I thought he was a good horse from the start,” said Yokoyama. “He's still a kid and he's still a challenge, but he's a horse I'm looking forward to.”

Added winning trainer Yoshito Yahagi: “I'm relieved to see such a performance from a new horse with such a deep pedigree.”

While not specifying any future targets, Shin Emperor would certainly be on a trajectory towards the 2024 Japanese Classics, which begin with the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) in April. There are two top-level opportunities for 2-year-old males in December in Japan, the Asahi Hai Futurity over a mile and the Hopeful S. going 2000 metres.
