Summer Wind Pays $1.8 Million For Frankel’s Grade II Winner Skims at Keeneland November

Andrew Rosen's Skims (GB) (Frankel {GB}) became the first to achieve a seven-figure pricetag as Book 1 of the Keeneland November hit its midpoint Wednesday afternoon in Lexington, hammering to Summer Wind Equine's Jane Lyon for $1.8 million. Consigned to the sale as hip 125 by Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, agent, the 4-year-old raced as a homebred for Rosen and was conditioned by Shug McGaughey to four wins from her 14 career starts, highlighted by a victory in the GII Sands Point S. as a 3-year-old in 2022. A Belmont allowance winner this past June, the half-sister to GSW War Decree (War Front) was also runner-up to Canadian Horse of the Year and recent GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf third-place finisher Moira (Ghostzapper) in the GII Canadian S. Sept. 9. Moira sold for $3 million at Fasig-Tipton Tuesday evening.

Del Mar: Six Sophomores Face Off In Opening Day’s Let It Ride Stakes

Six 3-year-olds have answered the call for runners in Del Mar's fall session opening feature – the $75,000 Let It Ride Stakes, an overnight offering at a mile on the lawn. It will go as Race 7 on an eight-race card at the seaside oval this Friday on the first of 13 race days during its 10th Bing Crosby Season.

First post daily throughout the four-week stand will be a 12:30 p.m.

The Let It Ride looms a contentious affair with none of the young horses jumping out as a stout favorite. Three of the runners come into the fray off a last-out maiden special weight tally, two on the grass and the other on the synthetic Tapeta at Woodbine in Canada.

That trio consists of Valient Ranches's Calm Sea, Augustin Stables' Camilo and Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal's Dandy Man Shines.

Calm Sea scored in a dead-heat going a mile and an eighth at Santa Anita on October 14. He was handled by Mario Gutierrez that day and will have the same rider up Friday.

Camilo comes down from Toronto where he registered his tally on October 7 at seven furlongs. He gets top rider Flavien Prat for his California debut.

Dandy Man Shines clicked at Del Mar at eight furlongs on the green on September 9. He had Umberto Rispoli up that afternoon and will partner with him again Friday.

Here's the rest of the field with riders: R3 Racing's Sharp Aza Tack (Tiago Pereira); Great Friends Stables, Davis, et al's Ah Jeez (Antoni Fresu), and C R K Stable's Smart Mo (Juan Hernandez).

The Let It Ride is the first of 15 stakes worth more than $2-million that will be presented during the meet, nine of them graded and 10 on the turf.

Racing will be held on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday basis through closing day on Sunday, December 3. Additionally, there will be a special card on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, with an 11 a.m. first post that will allow fans to make it home in plenty of time for turkey dinners.

Turfway Park’s Holiday Meet To Offer Average Daily Purses Of $384,700

Winter racing is approaching in the Bluegrass State and some of the country's top owners, trainers and jockeys will compete for substantial purse money at the Turfway Park Holiday Meet, which spans from Nov. 29-Dec. 30.

The Holiday Meet Condition Book features more than $7.6 million in purses (excluding extras and substitute races). The average daily purses throughout the 20-day meet amount to $384,700, which is about $29,000 more than what was offered over the 19-day period in 2022. The purse money includes funds from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund and is awaiting final approval from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

Registered Kentucky-breds participating in maiden special weight races will compete for a generous $70,000 purse, while allowances will range from $74,000 to $80,000. The Holiday Meet stakes schedule includes five black-type races, each worth $125,000: Holiday Inaugural (on Dec. 2), My Charmer (Dec. 9), Prairie Bayou (Dec. 16), Gowell Stakes (Dec. 23), and Holiday Cheer (Dec. 30).

“We're excited to kick off another racing season at Turfway Park and thrilled to offer some of the top overnight purses during the winter in North America,” Director of Racing Tyler Picklesimer said. “The Kentucky circuit has proven to be one of the best in the country and we are proud to be represented by some of the outfits who are stabled at Turfway Park and the surrounding training centers.”

In addition to the substantial purses, bettors will have the opportunity to wager on horses from some of the top stables in North America, including Turfway mainstays Steve Asmussen, Brad Cox and Mike Maker along with newcomers Tom Amoss, Josie Carroll, Phil D'Amato, Kelsey Danner and Cherie DeVaux.

Multiple leading rider Gerardo Corrales will return to ride at Turfway this winter and will be joined by many new faces in the jocks room including Gavin Ashton, Adam Beschizza, Declan Cannon, Declan Carroll, Abel Cedillo, Axel Concepcion, Tyler Conner, Colby Hernandez, Gabe Saez and Joe Talamo. Several Turfway mainstays are also scheduled to return including Alex Achard, Fernando De La Cruz, Albin Jiminez, Chris Landeros, Luan Machado, John McKee, Perry Ouzts, Ferrin Peterson, Joe Ramos and Walter Rodriguez.

Live racing will commence on a Wednesday-Saturday schedule with a daily first post of 5:55 p.m. ET. The Turfway Park Winter/Spring Meet will begin on Jan. 3.

War Horse Place Relaunches With GI Preakness Winner Rombauer

War Horse Place has secured the opportunity to stand GI Preakness S. hero Rombauer (Twirling Candy) for $6,000 LFSN, the breeding operation said in a release Wednesday.

Bred and campaigned by John and Diane Fradkin, Rombauer placed as a juvenile in the GI American Pharoah S. at Santa Anita before finishing third along the Derby Trail in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. He then won the second leg of the Triple Crown at Old Hilltop before finishing third in the GI Belmont S.

Joining him will be French group stakes winner as a 2-year-old, MGSW Sacred Life (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who retired with 27 career starts. During that time, he was on the board in 19, including a pair of graded stakes wins. He will stand for $2,000 LFSN with concessions to black-type mares.

GISW Smooth like Strait (Midnight Lute) will also join the stallion roster. He retired with five graded stakes wins and an additional 10 graded placed finishes. His career earnings total $1,813,863 and he will stand for $3,500 LFSN.

Owner and director of farm operations Dana Aschinger McCreary said, “We are excited to offer central Kentucky breeders' access to stallions who performed consistently at the highest levels of the sport.”

War Horse Place will host an open house Nov. 11 and 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. ET.
