Captain Bombastic, Saez Team Up To Take Belmont’s Mike Lee For New York-Breds

Team Hanley's Captain Bombastic ran down a game 38-1 longshot Listentoyourheart in the final furlong, overtaking him from the outside and holding on for a 1 1/4-length victory in Sunday's $100,000 Mike Lee for New York-bred 3-year-olds going seven furlongs at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Captain Bombastic, a stakes-winner against state-breds as a juvenile, continued a consistent start to his career, improving to 3-2-1 in six starts. To keep the streak alive, the Forty Tales colt first tracked the early speed as Listentoyourheart led the eight-horse field through an opening quarter-mile in 22.51 seconds and the half in 45.45 on the fast main track.

Under Junior Alvarado, Listentoyourheart was not content to be a mere pacesetter, holding the advantage out of the turn and continuing with a strong run near the rail at the top of the stretch.

Captain Bombastic, under Luis Saez, pressed on out of the turn and steadily gained ground on his rival before finally gaining command in the deep stretch. Saez kept up the pressure and Captain Bombastic responded, completing seven furlongs in 1:21.94.

“There was a nice pace up front. That was the plan,” Saez said. “I knew we had a couple speed [types] outside of us, so the plan was to track them. We got our spot and when we made our move he responded. I was very comfortable. I had a lot of horse. When he put me in that spot, I knew he was going to win.”

The Jeremiah Englehart trainee improved to 2-0-1 in three career starts. Bred by Chester and Mary Broman, Captain Bombastic, off at 3-1, paid $8.20 on a $2 win wager and improved his career earnings to $316,800.

“He's a really cool horse,” Englehart said. “He's not the biggest horse. He's small compared to most of the horses in this race, but he likes to run.

“He just looked really good coming into this race,” he added. “He's just very athletic and I thought Luis did a great job. I didn't want to be down in behind horses on the fence, I thought we'd be more in the clear, but it worked out well. I thought we would sit a stalking trip on the outside, but Luis rode him very confidently, saved the ground on the turn, split horses and had horse to finish.”

Listentoyourheart, trained by Christophe Clement, looked strong off a nine-month layoff, besting 8-5 favorite Dream Bigger by one length for second. The son of Afleet Alex started his sophomore campaign in the same strong fashion in which he commenced his juvenile year, when he won his debut last June before running second in the Rick Violette and third in the Funny Cide during the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course.

“He ran a big race,” Alvarado said. “He broke very sharp and I decided to try and take it from there. I thought maybe because I'm on a longshot, they would let me go out nice and easy. He did show that he belonged with these horses. He finished up well.”

City Man, Three Jokers, Mission Wrapitup, Bourbon Bay and Gandy Dancing completed the order of finish.

Live racing resumes Thursday with a 10-race card highlighted by the $125,000 Critical Eye for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-years-old and up going one mile on the main track in Race 9 at 5:36 p.m. Eastern. First post is 1:15 p.m.

Son Of Hot California Sire Clubhouse Ride Takes Aim At Snow Chief Stakes

Margot's Boy, yet another son of the “now” California stallion Clubhouse Ride, goes for his fourth straight victory and his first stakes triumph in Saturday's $150,000 Snow Chief Stakes at a mile and an eighth on turf at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

The race is named for the Eclipse Award winner as champion 3-year-old male of 1986 who retired in 1987 as the all-time California-bred earnings leader with $3,383,210.

He was trained by Mel Stute.

Clubhouse Ride stands at Pete and Evelyn Parrella's 145-acre Legacy Ranch in Clements, California, for $3,500.

Owned and bred by Alfred Pais (pronounced pie-EEZ), Margot's Boy's style is one of catch me if you can. In his last three races, he went to the front and stayed there, although at a mile and one eighth the Snow Chief will mark his longest race yet.

“We'll see how it develops; he doesn't have to be in front,” said Craig Lewis, who also conditioned multiple Grade 2 winner Clubhouse Ride.

“But I prefer to be in front if nobody else wants to be there and if he doesn't have to go too fast.”

Drayden Van Dyke has ridden Margot's Boy in all of his races and will be aboard again Saturday in the Snow Chief, one in the lucrative Golden State Series, this restricted to 3-year-olds.

“I won't have to tell Drayden anything,” Lewis said. “He knows the horse very well. He's a smart rider; I'm sure everything will be fine.

Ward ‘n Jerry Making Quick Turnaround For San Juan Capistrano

There's an old saying in racing about a horse that “can run all day,” and it applies wholeheartedly to Ward 'n Jerry, a 7-year-old California-bred son of Lucky Pulpit whose forte is marathon turf races.

That's why the gelding owned and bred by Mr. and Mrs. Larry Williams is coming back on a quick turnaround in next Sunday's traditional closing day feature, the Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes at a mile and three-quarters on turf.

One might say Ward 'n Jerry tuned up for the race in his last start on June 6 when he made a mild rally to finish fifth in the one-mile Crystal Water Stakes under 126 pounds.

“That wasn't quite his distance,” said Mike Puype, who sent out Ward 'n Jerry to win the G3 San Luis Rey Stakes at a mile and a half on grass March 21 at Santa Anita. “There's not really anything at Del Mar at a distance he likes so we have nothing to lose coming back here in just two weeks.

“Looking at the field, there's not that many horses of quality that can run that far, either. It's a good spot. … He's going to be pretty tough to beat in there.”

In 21 career races, Ward 'n Jerry has won six, with two seconds and three thirds for earnings of $375,579. All but his first three races–all sprints–have come on turf, the last 18 in a row at a mile or longer.

Puype, 53, a native of Phoenix, has been training since 1986, and has the utmost respect for Mr. and Mrs. Williams. “I've been with them a long time,” he said. “They're great clients.”

They live in Boise, Idaho, and in 1979 Williams founded the Idaho Timber Corporation, which grew into one of the top 10 private corporations in Idaho.

Should Puype capture the San Juan, it would still leave him in pursuit of a record that will never be broken, established by Charlie Whittingham, who won the race a remarkable 14 times.

MyRacehorse.com Buys into Authentic

If you’ve got a dream and $206 you, too, can own a piece of a contender for the GI Kentucky Derby. MyRacehorse.com has purchased a 12.5% interest in GI Santa Anita Derby runner-up Authentic (Into Mischief) and will soon begin the process of selling micro shares in the horse to clients. The transaction includes buying into the horse’s stallion career, which is a first for the racing partnership that specializes in selling very small shares in horses for a few hundred dollars or less.

Launched by CEO and Founder Michael Behrens in 2018, MyRacehorse has taken the traditional racing partnership and turned it into something almost anyone can afford. Rather than sell 20 or 25 shares in Authentic, MyRacehorse will sell 12,500. Behrens expects the final price for a share to be $206. For one share, the client will own .001% of the breeding and racing rights in the horse.

MyRacehorse often partners with Spendthrift Farm and was given the opportunity to purchase a part of Authentic after Spendthrift bought a majority interest in the 3-year-old earlier this month.

MyRacehorse has never sold more than 6,000 shares in a horse, but Behrens expects the offering on Authentic to sell out quickly. He cannot officially sell shares until getting approval from the SEC, which, he says, typically takes between five to 15 days. Partners can buy more than one share, but their total active investments cannot exceed 10% of a person’s annual income or total assets.

“We started out with more modest horses, but now we are seeing what people really want,” Behrens said. “This is what people desire. People love the action on the big days. We keep getting feedback. This is what they want, a shot at the Derby, a shot at the Breeders’ Cup.”

MyRacehorse has bought into high-profile horses before, most notably Street Band (Istan), who won the GI 2019 Cotillion S., and Lazy Daisy (Paynter), the winner of the 2019 GII Pocahontas S. But this is their most ambitious venture yet.

“We think this is a great chance to bring in people on the periphery or maybe people who have become a little less involved in a game they used to love,” Behrens said. “What we are seeing over and over again is people get re-energized by something like this because it is such an easy way to enjoy the sport you like. We’re hoping this brings in a lot of new people.”

With all prior partnerships, the horses were sold at the end of their racing careers and whatever monies were available were distributed to the owners. In the case of Authentic, Behrens is counting on even greater interest than normal because the owners will be in on his stallion career.

“We decided it would be really cool, not only for people to have the opportunity to have a Derby prospect, but also to stay in as he becomes a stallion,” he said. “We never had any desire to move into the stallion, breeding games. But with all the growth and all the people we have who are particpatory, we thought we should try this. The idea will be that you buy in for  racing and breeding equity and will own your pro rata percentage. We want to take people on the same great journey we always do. It will be fun to have a shot at the Kentucky Derby and also the chance to own a part of a great stallion. I think the ability to participate in that side of the game is going to attract a lot of people.”

Trained by Bob Baffert, Authentic won the GII San Felipe S. before finishing second as the 6-5 favorite in the Santa Anita Derby. He is considered by many to be top five threat for the Sept. 5 GI Kentucky Derby.

The MyRaceHorse perks include getting reports on the horses at least twice a week and access to the winner’s circle. Behrens said that if fans are allowed in for the Kentucky Derby and Authentic runs, the stable will buy as many seats as possible and then hold a lottery in order to figure out which partners get the seats.
