Inaugural Tattersalls Online Sale Topped by West End Girl

Badgers Bloodstock acquired Group 3 winner West End Girl (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) (lot 5) for a sale-topping £420,000 when bidding closed during the inaugural Tattersalls Ascot Online Sale on Monday. Formerly owned by Alan and Mike Spence, the G3 Sweet Solera S. heroine has an entry in the G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot on Tuesday. Consigned by Kingsley Park, the Car Colston Hall Stud-bred is out of the Dansili (GB) mare Free Rein (GB) and was last seen finishing third in the Listed Oaks Trial S. on June 5 for trainer Mark Johnston.

Originally purchased for 95,000gns out of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Johnston, she is the second foal, runner and winner for the winning Free Rein, who is a half-sister to European Highweight Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate), a winner of the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S., as well as Japanese listed winner & MGSP Best Approach (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). GI American Oaks and GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. heroine Ticker Tape (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) is under the third dam, as is the MGSW War Decree (War Front).

The other lot to sell on Monday was lot 4, Igotatext (Ire) (Ajaya {GB}), who was offered by Archie Watson’s Saxon Gate after a June 5 debut win over the Lingfield all-weather. The Cool Silk Partnership snapped up the son of first-season sire Ajaya for £165,000. Out of Tifawt (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}), Igotatext comes with an entry for the G2 Coventry S. on June 20.

The bay RNA’d for €13,500 during the 2018 Tattersalls Ireland Flat Foal & Breeding Stock Sale, before changing hands for €10,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale Part II. Bred by Peter and Hugh McCutcheon in Ireland, his winning second dam is a half-sister to English highweighted sprinter Kingsgate Native (Ire) (Mujadil), who won the G1 Golden Jubilee S., G1 Nunthorpe S. and ran second in the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye.

“A big team effort has gone into getting the inaugural Tattersalls Ascot Online Sale off the ground and we are very pleased with the results,” said Tattersalls Ascot Sales Head Matthew Prior said. “There were a few technical glitches along the way which were quickly resolved and we will learn from today’s sale, but overall it was a genuinely encouraging start for Tattersalls Online. We had wholehearted, enthusiastic support from the vendors as well as bidders from throughout the world, and we would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to all who supported and participated in this new venture. In particular we wish all the connections the very best of luck with their purchases this week if taking up their engagements at Royal Ascot.”

Blew’s Clues: Sole Volante A Gift Horse Who Keeps On Giving

Just 22 years old, Andie Biancone is living her dream in Thoroughbred racing.

Not only is she the assistant trainer for the successful stable of her father, Patrick Biancone, but she's co-owner of the graded-stakes winner and possible Belmont Stakes (G1) or Blue Grass (G2) starter Sole Volante.

Sole Volante, by Karakontie, was purchased by Patrick Biancone for $20,000 at the OBS April Sale in 2019 as a birthday present for his daughter.

After winning both of his starts last year on turf, Sole Volante finished third in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes in his dirt debut at Gulfstream on Jan. 4, then won the Grade 2 Sam F. Davis Stakes on Feb. 8 at Tampa Bay Downs. He then finished second to King Guillermo in the G2 Tampa Bay Derby on March 7 before returning to win an allowance race at Gulfstream last Wednesday, June 10.

Andie Biancone now races Sole Volante in partnership with Reeves Thoroughbred Racing.

Gulfstream host and analyst Jason Blewitt spoke to Andie Biancone for the latest edition of “Blew's Clues” about working and helping her dad, long trips in horse vans accompanying the stable's stars, and getting gifted Sole Volante by her father on her birthday.
