Pure Sensation Looks to Pick Up Baton for Clement in Jaipur

From 2016 to 2018 the GI Jaipur S. was won by a gray Patricia Generazio homebred from the Christophe Clement barn, starting with Pure Sensation (Zensational) in 2016 when the race was a Grade III. The following year, Pure Sensation was fourth to his stablemate Disco Partner (Disco Rico), who set a new world record en route to a one-length score. The Jaipur was upgraded to a Grade II in 2018 and Disco Rico successfully defended his title with Pure Sensation finishing third. In 2019, Pure Sensation skipped the Jaipur, which was boosted to a Grade I, and Disco Partner completed the trifecta behind World of Trouble (Kantharos). With both of those speedster retired to stud, Pure Sensation stands out as the one to beat in Saturday’s renewal.

Capturing the Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup just a week before last term’s Jaipur, Pure Sensation followed suit with a win in the GIII Parx Dash S. July 6 and was third next out in Saratoga’s GIII Troy S. Aug. 3, where Disco Partner finished second. Returning to winning ways in the GIII Turf Monster S. at Parx Sept. 2, the native New Yorker was fifth when last seen in the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Nov. 2.

Should Pure Sensation burn himself out early, Oleksandra (Aus) (Animal Kingdom)–the lone female in the field–could be the one who picks up the pieces. Rallying from well back to take Saratoga’s Smart N Fancy S. Aug. 17, she was third next out in the GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint S. Sept. 7. Back in the winner’s circle at Keeneland in the GIII Buffalo Trace Franklin County S. Oct. 11, the dark bay was second to the speedy Jolie Olimpica (Brz) (Drosselmeyer) last time in the GII Monrovia S. at Santa Anita May 25.

Stubbins (Morning Line) seeks his second graded stakes score in this event. Winner of Keeneland’s GII Woodford S. Oct. 5, he was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and kicked off this term with a third in the GIII Daytona S. May 23.

Charles Town Releases Updated Stakes Schedule; $600,000 Classic Set For Aug. 28

Caught up Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races' two-month shutdown related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the track's marquee event – the Grade 2, Charles Town Classic originally slated for April 18 – has found a new temporary home for 2020 as the 1 1/8 mile test for older horses has been rescheduled for August 28 following approval by the West Virginia Racing Commission at its Friday morning meeting. The Charles Town Classic, will be one of seven stakes races on the Friday evening card which gets underway with a special first post of 5:00 P.M. EST.

When it takes to the gate in a little more than two months, The Charles Town Classic purse will represent a trend shared with many other stakes around the country as its purse will be cut to $600,000 for the 2020 edition.

In addition to the rescheduling of the headline event, the Charles Town Oaks (G3) will also be run on the same day as the Classic for the first time. The 7-furlong Charles Town Oaks will be contested for a purse of $200,000. The two graded events will be joined by three other unrestricted 7-furlong stakes in the form of the $150,000 Dance to Bristol for fillies and mares, the $100,000 Robert Hilton Memorial for three year-olds and the $100,000 Russell Road Stakes presented by Triple Crown Nutrition for horses three-years-old and upward. A pair of West Virginia accredited stakes – the $50,000 Robert G. Leavitt and $50,000 Sylvia Bishop Memorial – complete the stakes laden card.

While the Charles Town Oaks has been moved from its previously scheduled September 19 date and two other unrestricted stakes originally bound for the same day have been cancelled, a quartet of West Virginia-bred stakes will still remain on the card and serve as a springboard to the West Virginia Breeders' Classics held three weeks later on October 10.

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. recently resumed construction on the new Hall of Fame Education Experience after a two-month delay because of the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent “New York State on PAUSE” executive order.

The Museum, which has been closed for the renovations since January, was originally scheduled to open to the public on July 16 coinciding with opening day at Saratoga Race Course. A new opening date for the Museum will be announced later this summer.

“We're excited that we are able to move forward with the Hall of Fame Education Experience,” said Cate Johnson, the Museum's director. “This is an important project for the Museum and the sport of thoroughbred racing and we look forward to sharing it with everyone as soon as possible. The work is going well and we are adhering to all state regulations and best practices related to health and safety.”

The Hall of Fame Education Experience will feature a reimagined and dynamic new Hall of Fame, including a state-of-the-art signature film and cutting-edge interactive Hall of Fame digital plaques. The new digital inductee plaques will include an in-depth multi-media look at the lives and careers of each human and equine member of the Hall of Fame. The project also includes a complete renovation of the adjoining Race Day Gallery and other updates throughout the Museum.

The new Hall of Fame will inspire existing and new fans through the understanding of the deep level of mastery of craft required of thoroughbreds, jockeys, trainers, owners, and breeders to reach the highest levels of the sport, as well as establish a new standard for dramatic and immersive interactive experiences throughout the Museum.

Prince of Lir’s The Lir Jet Wins the Norfolk

Having broken the all-aged track record on debut at Yarmouth June 3, Qatar Racing’s acquisition The Lir Jet (GB) emulated the 2009 success of his sire Prince of Lir (Ire) in this G2 Norfolk S. Registering the first success for his first-season sire on fast ground at the East Anglian venue, the 9-2 shot had easier conditions to deal with here and also a trailblazing Wesley Ward runner to deal with as Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) powered over the easy turf. It took until the final yards for the Michael Bell-trained bay to get to the US raider, but Oisin Murphy found the line in time to prevail by a neck, with three lengths back to Imperial Force (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) in third.
