Shoemaker Top Three Show Up For Rematch In Friday’s Maker’s Mark Mile

Peter Brant's Raging Bull (FR), winner of the Shoemaker Mile (G1) in his most recent start, headlines a field of 10 entered Tuesday for Friday's 32nd running of the $300,000 Maker's Mark Mile (G1) to be contested over the Keeneland turf course.

The Maker's Mark Mile, the first of four Grade 1 races during the five-day Summer Meet that begins Wednesday, is scheduled as the eighth race on Friday's nine-race program with a 4:57 p.m. ET post time. First post is 1:05 p.m.

Trained by Chad Brown, Raging Bull returns to Keeneland, where he finished fourth in last year's Maker's Mark Mile. A two-time Grade 1 winner, Raging Bull will be ridden by Joel Rosario and break from post position four.

Brown also trains Without Parole (GB), who finished third in the Shoemaker Mile. Owned by John Gunther and his daughter Tanya Gunther, Without Parole finished third in last year's TVG Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) in his U.S. debut. In 2018, Without Parole won the Group 1 St. James's Palace at Royal Ascot in England.

Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount on Without Parole and break from post position eight.

Also in the field is the horse that split the Brown duo in the Shoemaker: Next Shares.

Trained by part owner Richard Baltas, Next Shares counts the 2018 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland among his three graded stakes victories. An earner of more than $1.7 million, Next Shares will break from post nine and be ridden by John Velazquez.

Another horse returning to the Keeneland turf is Gary Barber's War of Will.

Trained by Mark Casse, War of Will finished fourth in the 2018 Dixiana Bourbon (G3) and also trained at Keeneland before embarking on a Triple Crown campaign that included a victory in the Preakness (G1).

War of Will finished sixth in the Shoemaker Mile in his 2020 debut that served as his first grass start since 2018. Tyler Gaffalione has the mount Friday and will break from post position 10.

The field for the Maker's Mark Mile, with riders and weights from the rail out, is: Hembree (Javier Castellano, 118 pounds), High Crime (Luis Saez, 118), Parlor (Florent Geroux, 118), Raging Bull (FR) (Rosario, 123), English Bee (James Graham, 118), Everfast (Ricardo Santana Jr., 118), Emmaus (IRE) (Brian Hernandez Jr., 118), Without Parole (GB) (Ortiz, 118), Next Shares (John Velazquez, 120) and War of Will (Gafflione, 118).

Fasig-Tipton July Horses Of Racing Age Catalog Grows To 165 Entries

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged an additional 16 entries to its July Horses of Racing Age Sale, increasing the size of the catalog to 165 entries.

These new entries are cataloged as Hips 150-165, and may now be viewed online. This latest group of entries includes:

Queen of God (Hip 152): Three-year-old filly captured the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway back in March, where she earned 20 Kentucky Oaks points. She hails from the immediate family of leading sire Uncle Mo. She is consigned by WinStar Racing, agent.
True Valour (Hip 154): Consistent grass runner captured the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile Stakes and G3 Thunder Road Stakes last year going a mile on turf at Santa Anita. Prior to that, he was a group stakes winner and multiple stakes winner in his native Ireland. An earner of nearly $400,000, he is consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, agent.
Gold Button (Hip 160): Three-year-old filly captured her career debut on June 25 at Churchill Downs in impressive fashion, winning by 3 3/4 lengths going seven furlongs. She is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
Sombeyay (Hip 162): Versatile 4-year-old son of Into Mischief captured the G3 Canadian Turf Stakes on grass at Gulfstream in February. At two, he captured the G3 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga on dirt. He has six stakes wins or stakes placings on his way to current earnings of $361,890. He is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

These entries may also be viewed in the sale's enhanced online catalog, which features pedigrees, race videos, statistical links, Ragozin “sheet” numbers, and real-time Daily Racing Formand Thoromanager past performances.

Print catalogs will be available on-site at Fasig-Tipton by Friday, July 10.

Fasig-Tipton will also continue to catalog approved entries up until sale time.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will offer an additional $2,000 to their Ship & Win program for any horse purchased at the July Horses of Racing Age Sale that makes a start at the 2020 Del Mar Summer meet. Horses purchased at the sale will receive a day three date from the racing office.

The July Horses of Racing Age Sale will take place Monday, July 13 in Lexington, Ky. The sale will begin at 4 p.m.

Washington Summer Yearling, Mixed Sale Catalog Now Online

The catalog for the 2020 Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale is now online, featuring 140 entries.

The auction will take place Tuesday, Aug. 18 at the Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavilion at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Wash. There will also be a paddock session of racing-age offerings to take place immediately after the sale, with entries open through July 29.

This year's group of offerings features 123 yearlings and 17 broodmares, prior to the close of entries for the paddock session.

In addition to a heavy population of Washington-breds, yearlings in the catalog were also born in Kentucky, California, Oregon, and Iowa.

Stallions whose first crops of yearlings are represented in the catalog include Cat Burglar, Cupid, Danzing Candy, Midnight Storm, Lord Nelson, Pontiff, Stanford, Raised a Secret, Shaman Ghost, War Envoy, and Wildcat Red. Broodmares in the catalog are offered in-foal to Cat Burglar, Danzing Candy, Misremembered, and Smiling Tiger.

Letter to the Editor: Dora Delgado Diversity Piece

I’m writing to offer my thanks for the article you posted recently featuring Dora Delgado. Timely, yes and helpful to learn more about her thinking on diversity, equity and inclusion within our sport.

It also hit home for me as my father was one of three black trainers actively campaigning in Chicago during the 1970s – 1990s. Mr. Clifford Scott, Paul Darjean and my father, Clenon Brown.

I’ve enjoyed the sport since age three, when my father started teaching me how to read the DRF, he noted, before I could read a book–a skill that still pays every now and then today (smile).

My father first got the bug by traveling to Ak-Sar-Ben with friends on weekends in the early 70s, which led to him buying a few claimers and racing in Floria and Chicago. Kansas City was home for us, but no pari-mutuel wagering laws on the books prevented him from enjoying the sport in Missouri.

Later, he moved into the sport full-time and began pursuit of his trainer’s license which he secured in Kentucky in the early 1980s. After that, he was off to the races, training in Kentucky, and Chicago.

Living in Missouri with my mother afforded me the chance to spend summer and winter breaks at Arlington, Hawthorne and Sportsman’s Park, mucking stalls, feeding our horses and those of our ‘day horses’ all the while soaking up the backstretch culture. In the meantime, my mother became an executive within state government in Missouri, and at home I grew up amongst legislators, governors and attended school with their children.

In my journey, I’ve served in the military and have made a career as an executive in charge of efforts by firms in the top echelon of the Fortune 500 in their diversity, equity and inclusion practices. My passion remains in Thoroughbred racing and hope that through this note I can raise my profile in the conversation underway. I think I can contribute value to stakeholders as we continue to invest in the sport, ensuring its future, leaning on lessons learned from its past.

Change is the only constant in business; as much as the sport leans on year-on-year consistency, its front, middle and back office appear not to have embraced some aspects change in the business model.
