Dubai Trainer Fined For Shockwave Violations

Trainer Ismail Mohammed, who has stables in both Dubai and the UK, has been fined AED80,000 (€19,035/£17,138) after horses in his care in Dubai in eight incidences were found to be treated with shockwave therapy inside the seven clear day threshold. A veterinarian involved has been banned for six months.

While Mohammed claimed to be unaware that the horses were receiving treatments at inappropriate times, he pled guilty and had a previously clear record in regards to shockwave therapy.

Veterinarian Dr. Fred Van Der Linde testified that the medical records presented to the ERA Stewards for the horses receiving shockwave therapy was incorrect. He said the dates entered were for billing purposes and that he had not kept record of the dates of actual treatment. In the absence of any additional records, Emirates Racing Authority stewards relied upon the records provided as treatment dates. Dr. Van Der Linde was disqualified for six months, commencing immediately and expiring on Dec. 28.

Khalifa Sat Gordon-Bound

Ahmad Al Shaikh’s Khalifa Sat (Ire) (Free Eagle {Ire}), the 50-1 runner-up in the G1 Investec Derby, will target the G3 Gordon S. at Goodwood on July 30, should he come through a work later this week in good order. Khalifa Sat had earmarked himself as a potential talent when winning the Listed Cocked Hat S. also at Goodwood in June, and cemented that status in the Derby.

“There’s a possibility he could run in the Gordon S. at Goodwood next week, depending on how he comes through a bit of work later in the week,” said trainer Andrew Balding. “He’s well, and the Gordon S. would be the intention. He’s just a lovely horse to have in the yard.”

Khalifa Sat isn’t the only big-name runner Balding will have at Goodwood, and the trainer reported G1 2000 Guineas winner Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) will also work later this week ahead of the July 29 G1 Sussex S.

“He’s good, he’ll do a bit of work later in the week–and if all is well after that, it’s all systems go for next week,” Balding said. “It does look a very good race–but it should be, because it is the Sussex S. It will be fascinating to see him take on Siskin, Circus Maximus and Marcus [Tregoning’s] horse [Mohaather]–and I’m sure there will be one or two others too. It looks like being a great race.”

Phoenix Aim For Aloha Star

Aloha Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), the surprise winner of last weekend’s G2 Airlie Stud S., could take on the boys next time in the G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh on Aug. 9, according to trainer Fozzy Stack.

Aloha Star had taken three tries to break her maiden, which she achieved at Bellewstown on July 2, and while her 33-1 score in the Airlie Stud was unexpected by most, Stack admitted he wasn’t entirely surprised.

“It was great to see her go and do that, because she’s a filly we always thought a lot of,” he said. “She was just a bit dizzy and fresh in Naas the first day, and then Chris [Hayes] taught her a lesson in how to settle in Tipperary. She won well in Bellewstown and stepped up again on Sunday, so it’s great.

“We’ll think about the Phoenix S.–she would have to be supplemented for that. Later on you’ve got the [G1] Moyglare [Stud S.], which we can put her in at the second entry stage. I was thinking about the [G2] Lowther at York, but she’d carry a penalty in that now, and you’ve obviously got the traveling to consider. We’ll see how she is, but she could run in the Phoenix and then go for the Moyglare.”

Trainer Ger Lyons has reported that Frenetic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) second as the favourite in the Airlie Stud, will take on older sprinters in the G1 Nunthorpe S. on Aug. 21 if he can find a jockey that can do the weight of 8st.

“It wouldn’t be my style running a 2-year-old against their elders, but she’s all speed, even though I think she gets six well,” said Lyons. “If you watch the race [the Airlie Stud S.], it’s the first time she’s ever seen another horse. She saw off the Ballydoyle horse and Chris [Hayes on Aloha Star] attacked her late and by the time she looked she was coming back at the line.

“I think she’s very fast, but the problem we could have is a jockey as she’ll have a very low weight. I asked Chris, who jumped at the chance, but I think it’s even too light for him.”

Owner Restrictions To Be Eased Further

Britain will ease its attendance restrictions slightly beginning on July 28 to allow more owners to go racing.

Owners are currently limited to two per horse and they may only attend for their race. Exact numbers going forward will be determined by each racecourse depending on its capacity and limits on gatherings set by the UK and local governments. The restrictions on arrival and departure times will be removed, however owners are advised to arrive 45 minutes prior to their first declared runner to allow time for health screening. From July 28 racecourses will be permitted to offer hospitality for owners in line with the guidance for restaurants, pubs and bars.

The easing of attendance and time restrictions on course will not apply to Welsh racecourses at this stage, as Welsh government regulations allow for a maximum of 30 people in the ‘owners’ zone’ at any one time.
