MGSW Synchrony Retired; Stud Plans Pending

Six-time graded stakes winner and Pin Oak Stud homebred Synchrony (Tapit–Brownie Points, by Forest Wildcat) has been retired from racing. The Michael Stidham trainee sustained a minor injury in his last out, an off-the-board finish in Monmouth Park’s Oceanport S. Aug. 9, and it was determined the required time to fully recover would cause him to miss the major fall racing.

Over six years of campaigning, Synchrony recorded his finest years in 2018 and 2019, when his wins included the GII Muniz Memorial H. at Fair Grounds and the GII King Edward S. at Woodbine. He also placed in Churchill’s GI Old Forester Turf Classic S. in 2018. His final tally of 29-9-5-6 and earnings of $956,652 included 16 black-type wins or placings.

Pin Oak bred and campaigned Synchrony, as well as his dam, GSW & GISP Brownie Points. His GSW half-sister, Chocolate Kisses (Candy Ride {Arg}), was also bred by Pin Oak and sold for $410,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga yearling sale in 2017.

Synchrony is scheduled to arrive at the Central Kentucky nursery this week. Stud plans are pending.

HRI Industry Education and Training Survey Results Announced

The education and training survey results, which 699 people participated in from Nov. 4-Dec. 16, 2019, were announced by Horse Racing Ireland on Tuesday. The main challenges of all survey participants-147 employers, 482 employees and 47 students-were financial and getting time off for additional training. Other issues for employees are work hours and low income, while for employers, set-up costs and staff shortages were problems. The 2020 industry education and training strategy developed by HRI to combat these changes are as follows:

Attract people to join the racing and breeding industry
Develop people to deliver and grow their skills and career in the racing and breeding industry
Support employers to retain staff to deliver and grow within the racing and breeding industry

These priorities will provide HRI with actions to develop a range of subsidized education and training services to the entire industry to upskill, re-train and recruit/retain staff.

“This was the first time a training education survey was conducted across the horse racing and breeding industry and provided us an opportunity to hear directly from people working in the industry,” said HRI Industry Education and Training Manager Grainne Murphy. “The data provided has helped to shape and inform our training and education strategy 2020-2022.

“Improving training and education opportunities must be a shared endeavour and we hope data from this survey along with future surveys can help drive change. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time and effort to complete the survey, especially my colleagues in the Irish Stablestaff Association, the Irish Racehorse Trainers’ Association, the Restricted Trainers’ Association, the Jockeys’ Association, RACE, the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board in helping us deliver this survey.”

Graded Stakes Winner Synchrony Retired; Stud Plans Pending

Pin Oak Stable's multiple graded stakes winner Synchrony, has been retired from racing.

According to Pin Oak general manager Clifford Barry, Synchrony exited his last race with a minor injury. Barry stated that the unfortunate timing would require time away from the races, missing all significant fixtures, so the decision was made to retire the homebred son of three-time leading sire Tapit.

Carrying the colors of Pin Oak owner Josephine Abercrombie, Synchrony has been an ultra-consistent campaigner. Over a six-year career, he won nine races and placed 11 times in 29 starts, and amassed earnings of $956,652.

His six graded stakes victories include a game rally in Woodbine's one-mile Grade 2 King Edward Stakes, back-to-back wins in the 1 1/8-mile G3 Fair Grounds Handicap, and a 2 1/4-length win in the 1 1/16-mile G3 Oceanport Stakes at Monmouth Park. In addition, he won or placed in 14 graded stakes at seven different race tracks, including Del Mar, Arlington Park, Churchill Downs, and Oaklawn.

As a 2-year-old, Synchrony signaled his talent early, with dominant wins at Churchill and Keeneland, posting impressive speed figures for a juvenile.

By Tapit, Synchrony is out of Pin Oak homebred Brownie Points. A daughter of Forest Wildcat, Brownie Points was a graded stakes winner of eight black type stakes, earning over $950,000. Her best performances included a victory in the G3 Ouija Board Distaff Handicap and a runner-up finish in the G1 Apple Blossom Handicap to Horse of the Year Zenyatta.

In addition to Synchrony, she is the dam of graded stakes winner Chocolate Kisses as well as stakes winner Point System.

Synchrony will be arriving at the farm later this week and stud plans have not been finalized.

Group 1 Winner, International Sire Muhtathir Dies At Age 25

Muhtathir, a top-class miler who developed into a leading sire, has died aged 25 due to the infirmities of old age.

Bred by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, the son of Elmaamul will be best remembered for his Group 1 victories in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville and in the Premio Vittorio Di Capua at San Siro when trained by Saeed bin Suroor.

Muhtathir began his career with John Gosden, for whom he won five races across two seasons in Sheikh Hamdan's silks – his biggest success coming in the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood.

The imposing chestnut was transferred to the yard of Saeed bin Suroor for his 4-year-old campaign, during which he tasted top-flight glory in Italy. However, it was as a five-year-old that he gained his biggest success when striding clear to take the Prix Jacques le Marois by three lengths under Frankie Dettori.

Muhtathir stood at Charles-Henri de Moussac's Haras du Mezeray in Normandy for most of his stud career, which has yielded a host of talented flat performers headed by Prix de l'Opera heroine Satwa Queen and top-class middle distance performer Doctor Dino, who is now a leading jumps sire in France.

In recent years, Muhtathir has made a significant impact as a sire of jumpers, producing the likes of dual Cheltenham Festival winner Envoi Allen and Grade 1-winning hurdler Quel Destin.

Shadwell Stud director, Richard Lancaster, said: “Muhtathir was a hugely talented performer on the racecourse and transferred that ability and will to win to his stock.

“He produced several high-class flat performers and in his later years became a highly sought-after sire of jumpers. He was still hugely popular this year, covering a limited book of 40 mares at €6,000 (US$7,077)

“I must give a special mention to the team at Haras du Mezeray, who did a superb job managing the horse and giving him the platform to flourish in his second career.”
