Goffs UK Yorton Sale Topped by Blue Bresil Colt

Topping proceedings at the Goffs UK Yorton Sale was a yearling colt by Blue Bresil (Fr) as lot 38. The bay is out of SP hurdler Hora (GB) (Hernando {Fr}) and brought £60,000 from Highflyer/NJ Henderson.

Of the 36 horses offered, 28 sold (78%) for a gross of £602,000. The average of £21,500 dropped -12% and the median was £21,000 (+5%).

“Holding any sale during the COVID era has presented us with additional challenges, and none more than this unique sale which is very different to any other,” said Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent. “But that is the appeal of the Yorton Sale and we are delighted with what we have achieved with David Futter and his team.

“The Yorton team had managed to compile a selection of horses that had significantly improved from last year’s sale, both physically and on paper, and this fact was not lost on purchasers who helped to achieve a 78% clearance rate which is a positive result in any year.”

Del Mar Maintains Purse Levels For 2020 Fall Stakes Schedule

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will present its seventh fall race meeting – officially titled the Bing Crosby Season in a salute to the seaside track's founder – with 16 stakes worth $2,250,000 scheduled during a 15-day session starting on Saturday, October 31.

Despite the concerns and obvious issues around the ongoing pandemic, the track was able to maintain the same purse amounts for its stakes as presented in 2019, including $300,000 incentives for its pair of Grade Is and $200,000 for its two Grade IIs.

Additionally, because Del Mar serves as California host for the Breeders' Cup races this year, it also will run two California-bred sprint stakes for juveniles that were not on its agenda the past two seasons.

Nine of the 16 fall stakes are graded; nine of the 16 stakes will be run on turf; seven of the stakes – all of them on grass – will be presented over the track's extended closing weekend which begins on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, and goes until closing day on Sunday, November 29.

“Given the current climate of things, we are very pleased to keep our fall stakes purse levels intact,” said David Jerkens, Del Mar's racing secretary. “The response to our summer racing program was exceptional. We are expecting similar results this fall. I am especially excited about our Thanksgiving stakes weekend, which has taken on national prominence.”

The track's two premier stakes will be presented on its closing weekend – the Grade I, $300,000 Hollywood Derby for 3-year-olds at nine furlongs on Saturday, November 28 and the Grade I, $300,000 Matriarch Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on Sunday, November 29. Both are run on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

Additionally, closing weekend also will offer the Grade II, $200,000 Hollywood Turf Cup for 3-year-olds and up at a mile and one-half on Thanksgiving Friday, November 27 and the Grade II, $200,000 Seabiscuit Handicap for 3-year-olds and up and a mile and one-sixteenth on November 28.

Racing will be conducted Saturday and Sunday for opening weekend, then Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the next three weeks, finishing finally with a four-day week around Thanksgiving.

First post daily will be 12:30 p.m. on all racing days with the exception of the track's special holiday card on Thanksgiving Thursday when racing begins at 11 a.m.

There will be six stakes offered for juveniles, led off by the two Cal-bred dashes – the $150,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies on Friday, November 6 and the $150,000 Golden State Juvenile on Saturday, November 7, both at seven furlongs.

Three of the juvenile tests are Grade IIIs – the $100,000 Bob Hope Stakes at seven furlongs on Sunday, November 15; the $100,000 Jimmy Durante Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at a mile on the grass on Saturday, November 28, and the $100,000 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes on Sunday, November 29, also at a mile on the lawn.

The Bing Crosby Season once again will kick off with a pair of $75,000 overnight stakes — the Kathryn Crosby Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on turf October 31 and the Let It Ride Stakes for 3-year-olds at the same distance and surface on November 1.

As in past years, Del Mar's racing office plans to card eight races during its weekday cards and nine for the weekend programs.

Ghaiyyath Stays on Top Longines WBRR

Godolphin’s Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) remains firmly atop the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings with a mark of 130, the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities announced on Thursday. The Godolphin bay is undefeated this year with scores in the G3 Dubai Millennium S. in February, the G1 Hurworth Bloodstock Coronation Cup S. ahead of Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (121) on June 5, the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. over Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) (124) at Sandown on July 5 and a latest victory in the G1 Juddmonte International S. over Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (121). Enable earned a 124 for her win in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. and won the G3 Unibet September S. on Sept. 5.

Second in the rankings this season is Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) (126), who won the G1 St James’s Palace S. ahead of Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) (122) and the G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois in advance of Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) (120). Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and American GI Belmont S. winner Tiz the Law (Constitution) match outstanding stayer Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) at 125. Persian King’s wins this season number three, in the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, G1 Prix d’Ispahan and G2 Prix du Muguet. Tiz the Law, despite running second in the Sept. 5 GI Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, earned his 125 in the GI Runhappy Travers S. Next highest from America is the Derby winner Authentic (Into Mischief) at 123, who also won the GI TVG.com Haskell Invitational S.

Others rated at 123 are Improbable (City Zip), successful in the GI Hollywood Gold Cup S. and GI Whitney S.; dual Classic heroine Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who also scooped the G1 Yorkshire Oaks; and Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) who won the G1 Qatar Sussex S. over Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (120) before injury curtailed his career. TCA Extends Sponsorship of Tbred Makeover & National Symposium through ’21

Thoroughbred Charities of America has extended its support of the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium through 2021. RRP will host a “double Makeover” for both 2020 and 2021 entries at the Kentucky Horse Park Oct. 12-17, 2021. Some aspects of the 2020 TCA Thoroughbred Makeover will be offered virtually this year, including seminars (presented as webinars), the Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit, a virtual 5K, the vendor fair, and the innovative Makeover Master Class training demonstration and discussion.

“The work of the Retired Racehorse Project is an integral part of Thoroughbred aftercare,” said Erin Crady, executive director of TCA. “2020 marks the eighth consecutive year that TCA has supported the Thoroughbred Makeover because we believe in the importance of its mission. We must continue to work to create a market for Thoroughbreds once their racing days are over.”

The Thoroughbred Makeover features trainers, who compete as professionals, amateurs, juniors and/or in teams, from across North America and who have prepared recently-retired Thoroughbred racehorses to compete for more than $100,000 in 10 equestrian sports. The 2021 Thoroughbred Makeover event will feature two divisions of competition: one for horses who were eligible and registered for the postponed 2020 event, and the regularly-scheduled 2021 division.

This year, 616 trainers were accepted for the 2020 TCA Thoroughbred Makeover, representing 604 unique individual trainers and teams. The majority of these trainers have elected to retain their entries when they were given the option to continue preparing for the 2020 division or roll their entry to the 2021 division.

Each horse and trainer will perform in one or two of the 10 disciplines offered and will be scored on performance and progression in training. Featured disciplines include barrel racing, competitive trail, dressage, eventing, field hunter, polo, ranch work, show hunter, show jumper and freestyle (a freeform discipline allowing trainers to demonstrate any skill of their choosing). The top five scorers in each discipline will compete in a Finale competition, and an overall winner, scored by the judges from all 10 disciplines, will be crowned Thoroughbred Makeover Champion. The 2020 and 2021 divisions will each have its own Finale and its own Thoroughbred Makeover Champion.
