Authentic’s Derby Win Voted Moment of the Year

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) named Authentic (Into Mischief)'s victory in the Sep. 5 GI Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve as the 2020 FanDuel Racing/NTRA Moment of the Year. The result was based on 3,403 votes cast via Twitter and an online poll.

The winning moment was held under unusual circumstances, with the race delayed from its traditional first Saturday in May spot and held without fans due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Authentic gave Hall of Famer John Velazquez his 200th career Grade I win and trainer Bob Baffert his sixth Derby victory. In addition, it was the first Derby win for B. Wayne Hughes of Spendthrift Farm, whose partners included MyRacehorse.com and over 5,000 microshare owners.

The FanDuel Racing/NTRA Moment of the Year is scheduled to be recognized at the 50th Annual Eclipse Awards presented by Spendthrift Farm Thursday evening. Authentic also accounted for second choice in voting for the Moment of the Year with his Nov. 7 GI Breeders' Cup Classic win. Third in the voting was Greg Harbut and Ray Daniels becoming the first Black owners in 13 years to have a Derby starter when Necker Island (Hard Spun) finished ninth.

An “NTRA Moment of the Year” has been recognized every year since 1999, when the late jockey Chris Antley held Charismatic (Summer Squall)'s leg while waiting for help to arrive following the GI Belmont S.
