A total of five cards at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Ariz., have been cancelled this month due to poor track conditions caused by rainy weather.
The issues began on Dec. 3, when racing was cancelled after the first race. Racing was again cancelled on Dec. 5, 6, and 7, then again on Dec. 12.
Leroy Gessman, executive director of the Arizona Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association, told Horse Racing Nation that the problem is caused by a layer of clay in the track surface.
“It does not mix with water,” Gessman told HRN. “And when it gets wet, it's very greasy and slippery.”
A notice on Turf Paradise's website states that to make up for those cancellations, the track will be adding additional races from Saturday, Dec. 10, through Thursday, Dec. 22 (With the exception of Saturday, Dec. 17). As a result of the additional races, post times will be moved up on those dates.
Below is the schedule for those race days:
Tuesday, Dec. 13 – 9 Races – Post Time 12:00 PM
Wednesday, Dec. 14 – 9 Races – Post Time 12:00 PM
Thursday, Dec. 15 – 9 Races – Post Times 12:00 PM
