As favorite Golden Pal missed the break, Caravel launched powerfully from the gate and lead nearly every step to pull a 42-1 upset $1-million Breeders' Turf Sprint (G1) Saturday at Keeneland.
The Pennsylvania-bred Mizzen Mast mare, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione for trainer Brad Cox, won by a half-length from Emaraaty Ana, who stormed up the rail in a furious closing bid to take second.
Creative Force finished third, a neck behind Emaraaty Ana. Golden Pal, who tossed his head and hopped a step as the starting gate opened, was never a threat and finished 10th in his final career start.
Owned by Qatar Racing, Marc Detampel, and Madaket Stable, Caravel covered 5 ½ furlongs in 1:01.79 on firm turf.
Caravel was last, finishing 12th, behind Golden Pal in last year's edition of the Turf Sprint when campaigned by her breeder, Elizabeth Merryman, and celebrity chef Bobby Flay. Subsequently offered for sale at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale, where she was consigned by ELiTE, she was bought by Fergus Galvin, agent, for $500,000.
Merryman bred Caravel from the Congrats mare Zeezee Zoomzoom,
Caravel came into the race following a victory the Oct. 16 Franklin Stakes at Keeneland and Saturday's triumph marked her fifth win from eight starts this year and first at the highest level. Overall, her record stands at 12-0-3 from 20 career starts.
