In Saturday's $200,000 Lady Tak Stakes, two of the biggest rivals on the backstretch of Churchill Downs – multiple graded stakes-winning sprinters Sconsin and Bell's the One – will face each other for the seventh time in the six-furlong dash on Arlington Million Day.
The compact field of five fillies and mares will go to post in Race 7 at 4:09 p.m. (all times Eastern) Saturday. First post is 12:45 p.m. for the special Arlington Million Day program. The featured $1 million Arlington Million (Grade 1) will go as Race 11 at 6:25 p.m. The co-featured event is the $500,000 Beverly D. (G1), a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In Filly & Mare Turf Division” race, that goes as Race 5 at 3:01 p.m.
Sconsin and Bell's the One are no strangers to Churchill Downs as they've both been based beneath the Twin Spires for the majority of their careers with trainers Greg Foley and Neil Pessin, respectively. The duo last faced one another in the $200,000 Chicago Stakes (G3), which was run June 25 at Churchill Downs. Both Sconsin and Bell's the One were not able to close ground in late stretch and finished behind front-running Lady Rocket. For those keeping score, Sconsin finished 1 ½ lengths in front of Bell's the One. Through six starts against one another, the duo has each defeated their rival three times.
Prior to the Chicago Stakes, the Lloyd Madison Farms-owned Sconsin scored her second-consecutive victory in the $200,000 Winning Colors (G3) in May. The homebred mare by Include has not worked since her runner-up effort to Lady Rocket in the Chicago but has continued to gallop at Churchill Downs. She'll be ridden by Tyler Gaffalione out of post No. 2.
Lothenbach Stable's Bell's the One has won on nearly every surface throughout her 25-race stand. She began her career at Arlington Park where she broke her maiden on the synthetic surface. As a 3-year-old, Bell's the One was victorious in the $75,000 Allen “Black Cat” LaCombe Memorial on the turf at Fair Grounds. Bell's the One has worked twice since the Chicago Stakes. Both times she was in company with stablemate Fine Cotton and with regular rider Corey Lanerie in the saddle. The daughter of Majesticperfection sped a half-mile in :46.80 Friday and skittered five furlongs in :58.80 on July 29. Lanerie will be aboard in the Lady Tak and break from the rail.
Here's the complete Lady Tak field from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):
- Bell's the One (Lanerie, Pessin)
- Sconsin (Gaffalione, Foley)
- Joyful Cadence (Rey Gutierrez, John Oritz)
- Lovemesomeme (Brian Hernandez Jr., Tommy Drury)
- Music City Star (Jose Lopez, Chris Davis)
