Cody’s Wish Tops Field Of Seven For Monday’s Hanshin

Godolphin's recent $200,000 Westchester (Grade 3) winner Cody's Wish tops a field of seven colts and geldings that were entered in Monday's $175,000 Hanshin presented by the JRA (Listed) at Churchill Downs.

The Hanshin is one of three stakes events carded on Monday's closing day program. First post is 12:45 p.m. and the Hanshin will go as Race 8 of 9 at 4:22 p.m. The Hanshin will share the spotlight with the $175,000 Bashford Manor (Listed) and $175,000 Debutante (Listed).

Trained by Bill Mott, Cody's Wish cruised to a five-length victory in the Westchester under jockey Junior Alvarado. The son of Curlin is a perfect 3-for-3 at Churchill Downs where he broke his maiden and won two allowance events as a 3-year-old. Cody's Wish, now 4, has never finished off the board with four wins, one second and three thirds from eight starts. He'll be ridden in the Hanshin by Alvarado from post No. 7.

Chief among his Hanshin rivals is Shortleaf Stable's multiple Grade 3 winner Plainsman. Trained by Brad Cox, Plainsman finished third to Last Samurai in the $1 million Oaklawn Handicap (Grade 2). So far in 2022, Plainsman's résumé includes a victory in the $600,000 Razorback (G3) and a runner-up finish in the $500,000 Essex (G3). Plainsman's last victory at Churchill Downs was in the $300,000 Ack Ack (G3) in 2021 where he ran a one-turn mile. Ricardo Santana Jr. will have the mount and break from post 6.

Other top horses entered in the Hanshin include David Miller's $160,000 Knicks Go upset winner Three Technique and C2 Racing Stable's $400,000 Steve Sexton Mile (G3) runner-up Mish.

Here's the complete field for the Hanshin from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Mish (Edwin Gonzales, Saffie Joseph Jr.)
  2. Runnin' Ray (Martin Garcia, Joe Sharp)
  3. Weyburn (Tyler Gaffalione, Brendan Walsh)
  4. Awesome Gerry (Gerardo Corrales, Saffie Joseph Jr.)
  5. Three Technique (Rafael Bejarano, Jason Cook)
  6. Plainsman (Santana, Cox)
  7. Cody's Wish (Alvarado, Mott)

Wagering is available on www.TwinSpires.com, the official ADW of Churchill Downs Incorporated and the Kentucky Derby.
